As far as the dead horse is concerned, I believe he is live and well. Reason is that color is an emotional choice in my opinion and we can pretty much guess how things can drag out when emotions are involved.

Anyway, after reading on & on, I wanted to know what is the process of color validation? I read it all the time on here, & please excuse my ignorance, but why does it cost so much. I mean, why can't just any color work? Why would there be problems with matches in a color brought back after only a 1 year hiatus (ala sebring silver in 2002)? Why spend all the $$$$? Please educate us, I'd love to hear about it.

I"ve been saying for years that color is subjective and emotional......no surprise there......and that also means that you can't make everyone happy. Again - if I were to be able to wave a magic wand tomorrow and add another 15 colors to the palllette -- we would still be hearing people complain about color.

If one goes to a color catalogue -- they'll find many different shades of paint.

The problem: not all colors have been thru validation - and validation takes on many forms.

For instance: What happens to the color in Phoenix for the person who never parks their vehicle in a garage? What happens when certain shades are exposed to high levels of various pollutants in the immediate area? ( good example: within a couple of miles of a chemical plant?) Our suppliers create colors (as they work with our designers) and then validate them - from fade resistance to ease of application to how the paint will flow on various surfaces -- I'm not a paint engineer or designer, so I'm only hitting the high spots here - it really is a science as well as an art......

Another issue: Certain colors can be painted 'one-off' - but are virtually impossible to build in an assembly plant body shop.....and a perfect example is "Sunrise" (the color of bumblebee) I had one independent body shop owner who wanted to tar and feather me when I told him it was impossible to paint that color in an assembly plant......he wanted to tar and feather me because he says he can paint it very easily. He may be able to - but he doesn't have to paint cars at a line rate the way an assembly plant does. Further, the cost of the materials to paint 'Sunrise' is enough to choke a horse, so to speak.....

you asked about the Sebring silver issue in 2002 - you may recall that the 2002 Camaro had body surfaces made of a few different materials - from SMC (sheet Molded compound) RIM (Reactiive Injection Molding) Endura, sheet steel, and sheet aluminum. Each reacts differently esp. with metallic colors - and we had issues with the body side moldings.......

IOM has got to be the muddiest orange ever, The yellow is tired, Charcoal grey was the color of my buddies '82 Camaro..read dated...IBM is..well a Traverse doesn't even look good in IBM. You need white or Chrome on IBM or its just a color that does nothing.

:

No - our Crystal Red Tintcoat isn't anywhere close to your grandfather's 1991 Cutlass - and no, Cyber Gray Metallic isn't anywhere close to your buddy's 1982 Camaro. Yes - the reds are in the maroon family and the grays are in the gray family - just as my brother is in my family - but we don't look anything alike.

......I'm far better looking.......

I'm sorry I can't make you happy with our colors..... I wish I could - but if I make YOU happy with the color pallette - there will be a whole bunch of other people unhappy.

It's called "human nature".......

I understand the emotion and the desire for these cars - (that's part of what makes them great....) Perfect example: We come out with a video of the ZL1 on the track at Nurburgring - the car by any measure is a monster........and yet you will still have those who want to complain........if I were able to make 300 pounds disappear off of the car overnight and put another 50hp in the engine....we would STILL have someone say ".....yeah......BUT.......

I've tried my best to explain the reasons behind the colors.......and frankly, if you went onto a Mustang Site or a Challenger Site or a Corvette site, you would get similar reactions to their color choices. It's part of the nature of the beast, so to speak.

So - I don't think there's anything else I can add........

I'm sorry you don't like our colors.

Thank you for taking the time to explain a pinch more to the crowd. Some will still say (and it's getting old) it's just more excuses. Some are trying to pick the "flysh*t out of the pepper" on this. I think I'm detecting a little Co2 as a matter of fact on this subject. FYI, I love the "completeness" of the ZL1. It is great to see how much is included on this pinnacle achievement.

Pricing and deliveries are the next hot topic. Fasten up!

Thanks again!!

Wow, I had no idea that much thinking goes into paint. Did they use so many dissimilar materials (steel, plastic, aluminum, SMC, etc) in the 60's? Did they even go through the process of color validation back then? How much better are the paints now?

I do remember seeing many more rusted cars when I was a kid in the 70's & 80's. Is it due to paint quality?

By the way, I didn't like the color palette until red & blue was put back in for 2012. I also think the Camaro palette is much better than the Challengers & Mustangs.
