The Camaro usually compels us to forget about most things other than horsepower, quarter-mile times and smoky burnouts. As such, "safe" would have to be somewhere near the bottom of attributes that come to mind when we think about the venerable pony car with a Chevrolet badge on its decklid.

But here it is in black and white (and yellow): The Chevy Camaro coupe is the first vehicle to earn a perfect score in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's safety testing since the federal testing procedures were revised for 2011, according to Examiner.com. While other vehicles have earned an overall NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating, the Camaro was the first to score a perfect five-star rating in all six test categories. Those include frontal barrier crash test ratings for the driver and passenger, side crash ratings for the driver and passenger, a rollover rating and the vehicle's overall rating.

While the report indicates that NHTSA has not yet tested its entire slate of 2012 model year vehicles, of the 46 that have completed the process, only 14 have received a 5-Star Safety Rating. Even if the Camaro's safety score is an outlier among the other accolades it has received over the years – you know, the NHRA, Trans-Am and SCCA hardware and such – kudos to Chevy.

Found these today that were just uploaded. Pretty cool stuff. Shows how safe these cars are. NHSTA rates it 5 stars.

Here is link from safercar.gov. From what I found the 2010 was rated 4 stars, which is great as well. Just shows the hard work the company is doing to improve these cars.

working on it now. Only thing I found was this. 2 Weeks ago they were talking about testing a number of vehicles.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/com.../nhtsa1711.pdf

The 2012 Camaro was one of the ones there in the process of testing.

Camaros from the 3rd generation on up are some of the safest vehicles on the road, or were, for the time period in which they were in production. When the 4th gen came out in 1993, it had dual airbags and was rated very well in crash tests. Then, they came out with separate ratings for passenger and driver, and it still scored well. This is in a time period when most family sedans only came with a driver airbag, and trucks didn't have airbags at all! The Camaro has been an unsung safety leader now for years.

Safety was a key design feature because insurance rates on the Camaro were skyrocketing. Even watching those crash test videos of the 4th Gen now are pretty amazing how well the driver and passenger vital space stays intact. I'd expect nothing less of the 5th gen, and obviously, their efforts paid off. Congrats, GM, on another safe and very fast car

For comparison, here's a few cars that you might think are safe, but aren't....Big doesn't always equal safe. Compare just how advanced the 5th Gen really is compared to these things:

Some videos of 2012 Mustangs doing the same test.

Don't get caught being a passenger in a mustang. =p 3 stars in one of the videos.

4 stars all around.

Where are all all those washers flying around coming from? Was there a bag of washer left in the back seat. Looks like that big dummy was barely scratched thanks to the airbags.

The frontal crash is impressive. The doors, a-pillar, window opening, etc. barely moved. I bet the door could still open and close easily.
The Mustang did good too.
