Well Paul you already have the intake off so you might as well bolt down a Magna charger while you're in there! lol

I always planned on getting a catch can, but didn't until I did my cam at 21k miles. When I pulled the heads and saw all the buildup, and particularly how the valves were getting spots on the seals... Given some more time, they'd get to the point where they wouldn't seal correctly, which results in a large loss of power. (I've always used nothing but Chevron premium btw) They were bad enough I opted to lap the valves to get a good seal on them. Below are pictures, some comparing pre-lapped valves and seats to a lapped valve (with a good seal).

Needless to say, a brand new Elite Engineering Catch Can from JDP Motorsports went on immediately, and I've been very happy with it since!

Those photo's are the best reason for a catch can.

We are talking about past the MAF Sensor into the part of your engine that really is the intake. Specifically about the PCV system (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)

Not the Cold Air Intake.......I think that should be called cold air ducting.....look up an intake for a chevy 350 and you will see something like an edelbrock intake made of aluminum......just a pet peeve
I'd like to take the opportunity to clear up some misinformation. For years automotive manufactures (Chevy, Ford, Dodge) have blamed aftermarket "Oiled" filters for causing MAF sensor failures. When I worked for K&N we got so many calls and claims that we had to step up and do some testing. What we found was very interesting and leads to yet another reason why a catch-can is important.

We took sensors and submerged them in filter oil (mineral based oil) and then reinstalled them into our test fixture. The sensor performed within factory specs..... So we started digging more into it and we found a few causes to MAF sensor failures. The first was during the manufacturing process they use a potting material within the sensor, this was a cause of the failures as the potting material would bleed into the circuits. The 2nd issue and the one that pertains to the PCV Catch-Can was the vapor or fumes that would back track through the air intake track which then causes the sensors to become contaminated. The PCV catch-can helps to prevent this issue as well.

The bottom line is there is no downside to using a catch-can and at the end of the day it is cheap insurance. I had one installed on my Camaro 2 days after I bought it... I'm glad I did!

Quick questions , I was thinking of getting the RX catch can but the other day I walked in to a local performance shop by my house and they had some nice looking universal catch cans from $ 50 to 70 dollars , my question is if there is any crazy difference between catch cans ?? From what I read they all have the same purpose .
Thanks in advance .

I think there is differences in cans, at least the few I have had. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I'm ordering an RX next week - got 1200 miles on it now. Should I pull off the manifold and clean it out? I'm a DYI person so am not worried about pulling it off, just wondering if its worth it.

Thanks!!
