I am sure the 650 hp in the 2013 will persuade some otherwise neutral buyers to purchase the Mustang over the ZL1, but the Camaro guys will still buy the ZL1 and the Mustang guys will still buy the GT500.

For the most part I agree with you, but here's the kicker.
What if the ford comes in at the same price or lower?
I think that really changes the game.
-Bobby

Sidenote:: If the ford comes in a lets say 5G more that the ZL1 then the 580 vs 650 is moot because of price.

All I know right now is that the Mustang GT500 is:

-More powerful by 70HP and 44ft-lb
-That it will probably be lighter
-Will likely be faster in the 1/4 mile
-Will probably be cheaper
-Has no gas guzzler tax unlike the ZL1
-Beat the Camaro ZL1 in its introductory year (super lame)

I don't think the Camaro ZL1 is going to win anything here, not even on price.

Right now, the only chance GM has is to make it up in 2013 and with interest!(That means payback)

All the horse power I have in my car right now and a stock GT will beat me to the next light till I get these wheels off my car. All I do is spin.

Plus, top end horse power says nothing for how much of it is usable at what moments it's needed the most. It's gonna be quite expensive to catch the ZL1 aftermarket with an SS. I expect to beat the ZL1 on the drag strip but I won't TOUCH it on the course. Not without some supercars and some serious fine tuning.

Although the ZL1 should beat it around the ring with the mags etc.
I really feel ford did thier homework on this one, and caught GM being like old GM.

Maybe. Time will tell. But if you're right GM should be working to counter that now. But like Shno and Milk said, horse power isn't everything.

If Ford isn't careful they'll kill themselves with guys waiting. GM too. Considering the cost it's a lot to pay to only watch a better car come out a year later. They'll start pissing people off. To buy a phone this week and see a better one by the same company a week later kinda gets irritating. But it's just a phone. To spend 60k+ only to see a better product by the same company the next year would really suck.

My whole thing is really, ZL1 top dog day one!!
If the ZL1 was already out a year, I understand the ford upgrade.
But to rain on the parade of the top dog is a crime and GM just watched.

Its a very long shot but this is what I propose:

Since we all know about the heavily followed unwritten rule concerning the Camaro and how its most powerful version cannot be more potent than the most powerful Corvette of the given current year. Right now, for 2012, that is the Corvette ZR1 with 638HP which puts the 650HP 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 clearly out of the reach of the 580HP Camaro ZL1. Even if Chevy wanted to do something about it, they couldn't because their fate was sealed with the 2012 Corvette lineup.

Now, this is where the hope for a better more competitive future for the Camaro comes in. Its a long shot at victory but please bare with me. 2013 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Corvette and will bring its 7th generation. Hopefully, this will bring about a power boost across the entire Corvette lineup. Furthermore, with the new generation of the Viper coming out for 2013 with an estimated 650-700HP, Chevrolet will be forced to outdo the Viper and confirm its title as king for its 60th birthday as well as for its new 7th generation.

Hopefully this will push the Corvette's ZR1 power levels to somewhere between 650-700 thus paving the road for a more powerful Camaro ZL1 able to compete with the Mustang Shelby GT500 for Camaro's 2013 model year.

As I said, it was a long shot.

I'll eat my hat if these cars top 750 horse power on the assembly line. It has to stop somewhere.

The fly in the ointment is the fact that the C7 Corvette definitely will not be a 2013 model. 2014 at the earliest. The 60th anniversary Corvette will be nothing more than some weird color & a few stickers. Just like the 50th & 40th anniversary cars were.

Be nice though if your theory were to happen.

But how many people will actually take the car to the track to run laps? Not very many......how many will drag race the car? A good amount I'm sure. Bragging rights around my way are at the strip and a high HP engine and supporting cast are a better deal than the Z. I think Chevy may have been out done here, but until the cars are in our hands.....we won't know. 650 RWHP in mine with my Nittos puts me in the 10s, which is fine for me and am still under the cost of both most likely. Both seem like great cars, but prices are getting ridiculous. I may get one, but it will be a MY 14 or 15.

Agreed. Which is why I say I'd buy an SS and mod it for much cheaper than it would cost for me to buy a ZL1. I'm only really interested in the drag strip and a decent package to hit the twisties around the area. I"ll never be able to know the difference in MR and a good set of coilovers anyway.

And just because the new GT500 will have 650 hp means nothing. My car has around 700. But my car won't beat a ZL1 around the track. We tend to get carried away with the numbers.

I don't even think that the 650BHP GT500 will be faster then the ZL1 in the 1/4mile.

on paper... everything looks great, but in the real world, things can be different.

I dont either......I tried to make a point earlier that when my SS only had a few bolt ons and a tune, that the GT500s in my area could barely beat me or sometimes I would take them out. That it was pretty much a drivers race with all the extra power the Shelby had. I don't think the power difference will matter to Joe Everyman on te strip. But I was told I was dumb for it. If a 540 hp Shelby can have trouble with a 465 est hp barely modded SS, then I think Ford is in for a surprise.
