2011 SS stranded at my house, car wont stay running, fires and bogs an shuts down.
I spent all day detailing my personal cars and my friend stopped by with his 2011 SS.
he decided to wash his car while I was cleaning up in the garage and he left the car running while he did so for around 25 minutes. When he went to pull in my heated garage to dry it off the car choked and bogged and shut down. It sounded like it was out of gas but the tank was 3/4 full. he tried 5 times and the car struggled to start and stay running and would choke when he engaged it in gear and shut down 5 times. Now I got in the car and tried and got it running and floored the gas a little and i managed to get it in my garage after 3 attempts. it then decided to remain running, the idle was up and down and then seemed fine. Its now staying at my house so i can look into it further for him. Has anyone here ever had this happen on a bone stock 6 speed car? I know GM is notorious for having fuel pump issues so that is my first assumption. His car does sit alot since he rarely gets to drive it but this is just strange and the first Camaro i ever witnessed to have this happen then it ran fine. I hooked up my Snap On Scanner and no codes show up and Onstar didn't detect anything. |

If you can get it to run long enough, see if you hear the fuel pump clicking (usually within about 5 minutes of starting).
Also, if the car sits enough he could have water in the tank. Might be worth getting a fuel additive to clear that possibility.

Its a 2011 even if it sat since he bought, there should be no problems, he probably overheated the fuel pump letting it idle so long. If it drives fine now leave it alone.

Mine did that it had something to do with the ignition system.

any chance the battery can be just low from sitting? he didnt spray the engine area at all with water as I watched him. its not making him a nervous wreck to even drive the car so I need to do some trouble shooting on Monday. I know guys with blowers are doing voltage booster kits i might have to see if i can check the volts on the pump when its at idle for 20 min or so.

Is the clicking a good or bad sign? |

I let my 24 year old car idle for a half an hour to 45 minutes and it's fuel pump doesn't overheat. The only way to do that would be to constantly run it on vapors. |

Haha why would it over heat? Only way to do that is run the tank dry, has nothing to do with idling.

Why would you wash a car while it's running?

Fuel pumps use the gas to keep it cool, so as long as the gas is a decent level the pump will be fine (over-heating wise)
Id say it would be odd for the pump to go out with low miles, but water can get into some very bad places, like the ignition system. Let it dry out, because if water is in something and you try and start it, you can ruin that part (coil, module, etc). My 4th gen allows water to get between the coils and module, so I let it dry out after washing, and try not to drive in heavy rain, its ruined more coil packs than I care to say. I know the 5th gen is a different car, but my dad had a 2004 Mercury Marauder and sprayed under the hood with water while he was cleaning it and it started hickuping and acting stupid, he went on the interstate and went about 130 and it dryed it all ot, and it ran smooth after that. |
