Let the filter do it's job, it will collect all the junk. In the end it is what you feel comfortable with.

metal flakes...jeez, i could eat a few flakes of metal and it probably wouldn't hurt me. small flakes of metal in a metal engine...does anyone really think that would damage an engine?

Probably where I'll be doing mine. I'm switching straight to Valvoline synthetic.
That could spell disaster for those who spent all their money on the car....
