I paid $500 the first time I ordered and $1000 the second time. I had no trouble getting my $500 back from the first dealer when I canceled my order. Matter of fact he had to call me and ask me to come get it cause I just kept forgetting to go get it.

You are incorrect. You are ordering a special order to your specs and making a commitment to buy the car under the terms of the contract. If you don't complete your purchase, you are breaching a contract and subject to losing your deposit PLUS a percentage of the selling price. It is written usually on every standard dealer buyer's order. Unless the dealer is arranging financing for you and you don't accept the terms under regulation Z, in that case, you would get your money back. The dealer in either event can return your deposit but is no legally obligated to do so. You can still be sued for breach of contract. Do you think you can just order a $75,000 truck in a special color with odd equipment and not be expected to complete the purchase? When you special order furniture they want 50% up front. Why is $1000 for a 25-40 grand car so outrageous?

FWIW, why wouldn't you want a solid two way commitment between you and your dealer? If you can change your mind and get the money back then shouldn't the dealer be able to sell the car out from under you to a higher bidder? You can't have it both ways.
You commit, they commit. $1000 is not unreasonable at all.

Every car I ordered I was asked to put something down. #rd ordered vehicle. This time it was 1k. I wouldn't sweat it. It's going towards the car anyway.

I put $1000 down, non-refunable unless I back out before it gets into the system then they'll just hand the check back to me, and it goes towards the cost of the car and getting MRSP. I thought this was reasonable.

Put down $2000 non-refundable deposit. Did not matter to me since I don't plan on backing out.

Hey chapinville when and where did you order from. I'm in river ridge and thinking about ordering. Theres only 2 dealers around here that say they will take and order. They both want $1000 down non-refundable. Also did you have to $2000 down.
