That's probably not a good idea. I don't know this for sure, but I imagine that, unless you're driving on always smooth as glass roads, the bumps won't be good for the disk and you'll end up losing information and having to buy another hard drive. Better to stick with flash memory.

I think it said any USB media that holds MP3s...?

The only thing I would be concerned about is the file system... for example, my PS3 can read any USB hard drive if it's formatted as FAT32, but not NTFS (which yours probably is). Does anyone know what the Camaro can read?

Also, most likely your 500GB hard drive has its own power supply (not directly powered via USB). So you'd have to get some kind of AC -> DC converter to be able to plug it in.

There are 2.5 inch portable hard drives that run on USB power, such as

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136227

320GB for $85 where for flash memory you'll pay almost the same price for 32GB.

Not saying I have 500GB of music, just that my music is on a 500GB hard drive (although if recorded in a "lossless" format, they can take up good amount of room). I didn't think about the vibration, as that would be an issue unless it as a SSD.

I guess the better question then is what file system(s) does it support? FAT, FAT32, NTFS, HFS, HFS+... ?

A ipod is nothing but a harddrive with a screen on it. it it have never had a problem in my car. so why would a regular hard drive have a problem.

Because ipods were designed with the idea that they might be moved rapidly, shaken, etc. Computer hard drives most definitely were not.

And it depends on which ipod you have. Some are solid state, which won't have the problem with vibration.

Also, the smaller ipods (<16Gb, I believe) are flash memory, so no moving parts. A big external harddrive is going to have platters that could get corrupted from excessive vibration. SSD would definitely be ok though.

You could just mount the drive vertically to reduce vibrations.

Ok then, I skimmed through the thread and just wanted to know how the car will differentiate the format of files. Is there a particular way the files have to be set?
