GM prepares to announce Pontiac closure next week

General Motors may announce early next week that its Pontiac brand will be eliminated, said a source familiar with the company's plans. The announcement will be made as part of an updated viability plan to the U.S. auto task force, the source said.

A second source indicated earlier this week that GM was considering phasing out the brand instead of sticking with the current plan to have it continue as a niche marque.

GM, surviving with $15.4 billion in U.S. government loans, had planned to keep Pontiac along with mainstream brands Buick, GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac. Saturn, Hummer and Saab are up for sale.

Reports that GM is contemplating killing Pontiac surfaced today in Australia, where GM builds the Pontiac G8 sedan.

My salesman told me a little over a month ago that Pontiac was OVER! Along with Saturn and Hummer..At least them being produced by GM.

No more Pontiac firebird resurrection. I guess they still can bring it back but call it a Chevrolet Firebird or GTo etc..

Sad day...My first V8 car was a 1998 Blue Green Chameleon Firebird Formula LS1 with T-Tops. I loved that car. :(

I hope to live the dream once again when I get my new Camaro though. I guess that's something to be happy about.

Not a bad idea actually. The imapala is built in Oshawa... it almost makes too much sense to move the manufacturing of the G8 to Oshawa with it's platform-mate replacing the Impala.

I actually sat in a G8 at the Austin Auto Show. Although it was a nice car, I didn't really care for the interior. I like the 2010 Camaro's interior much better. Nothing against the G8, but the Firebird would have more appeal to many more people if they brought it back right. Now they might never bring the bird back...

The Firebird can come back, just not as a Pontiac.. Unless they sell of the brand Firebird to another car company, then its still their brand name.

Don't flame me for this but isn't this one of the problems GM has right now is too many cars that are too similar or the exact same badged under another brand?

Solstice Coupe
and a new, re-done, Super Muscular, REVIVED GTO with a honkin' V8 ONLY.
and keep these very niche, very performance, and VERY limited. they'd surely sell.

but, that would nevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver fly.
it be cool as hell though.
