How many ZL-1's will be built each day?

I was just poking around on my calculator and trying to figure out a theretical number of ZL-1 cars to be built each day for the next 5 months.

Fbodfather has hinted that the ZL-1 will be made until June, I'm not sure if this is the normal month for the shut down and retooling for the next model year, but if so cool beans.

So here goes. We all have heard that GM would like to build ABOUT 3000+ ZL-1s.

With the time frame that I posts up, if building starts Feb 1st and goes until 30 June, that is 151 days if you work 7 days a week. (I don't know the factory's work schedule, but that's with multiple shifts working to meet their normal quota)

Now take 3000 divided into 151 and you get 19.86.cars to be built each day to reach the estimated number of cars needed to reach their goal. Let's just round that up to 20 cars, just for the fact that I'm sure their is some friendly compation going on at the factory to see how fast they can build safely and not compramise quality.

So take 20 x 30(monthly average) = 600

That's 600 Cars that GM could build per month, and that does not include the other models made at that factory.

I doubt they will have to shut any lines down or make serious adjustments to fit the ZL-1 into the production line. Sure they could devote 1 or 2 weeks to build nothing built ZL-1s, but I think that would be more of a logistical nightmare than just fitting it in with the normal camaro production.

So in closing,

20 Zl-1s a day
600 a month
3000 to June.

And that doesn't include the cars that will be just pushed onto a dealership that didn't think they were getting more than they were allocated.

I think that would be impossible considering the zl1 is on the same line as other camaros. I'm guessing 2000 will be the closer production number for 2012

20 cars is nothing really. They run multiple shifts with the camaro run, so basicly that would be 10 cars per shift to build. Which is not much at all. That would replace about 5 SS and 5 LS/LT cars per shift.

The Buick Regal is also built on the same line. They used to build about 450 Camaro's in an eight hour shift, but now they run 2 eight hour shifts with the Regal on the line. From what I saw in June the Camaro was well outnumbering the Regal.

Dateline: Detroit 5:10 EST

It was discovered late this afternoon that a person answering to "Fbodfather" had his head explode after reading a post on a Camaro Enthusiast site..........

X 1,000!!!

J/K.

Don't go there, please.

There is nothing to gain.

(and we don't run 7 days a week....)

Interesting tidbit: Some components are constrained by capacity.

Believe it or not, but during C5 Corvette Production, it was so hard to get wheels (polished) for the Corvette that we actually flew them into Bowling Green on commercial airline flights! There simply wasn't enough capacity in the industry to produce enough Aluminum wheels! Thus, we were literally yanking them from the supplier's assembly line - and rushing them to an airport and putting them on a plane - all so that we ould not have to shut the Corvette Assembly line down!

(.............golly - I really DO need to write that book.............)

I'm not so sure they would build/mix ZL1's at the same time they are doing SS's! Something tells me there would be too much opportunity to cross pollenate wrong parts and make ridiculously RARE hybrids! I've seen (in the past) where there would be one badge on one side of a vehicle and different badge on the other. But we are talking a lot more than badges here! So, can anyone say, will the production of ZL1's be segregated or mixed????

I went to a local Chevy dealer here in San Diego to try to get literature on the ZL1, and the salesman told me that they were only going to built 800 for 2012. Who are you to beleive.? They also said they will be selling them for about 5,000. over MSRP. He told me my best bet was to go on the internet and buy out of state.

The ZL1 is the subject of much speculation by a lot of ignorant sales people. If GM was only going to build 800 of them, then Scott probably would have told us. Your dealer is probably correct in that you should buy from another dealer, but not necessarily out of state.
