need puppy help

We got a german shepherd puppy, we named him Thor if anyone remembers the old thread about his name.

Anyways he wont eat properly we give him the food the breeder feeds him and its a combination of wet and dry food he eats the wet food but leaves the dry food there. He also just sleeps all day getting up to drink water and pee.

Could he be sick??

It certainly wouldn't hurt to take him to your vet and have him examined.

He could be sick. I would take him to the vet and while you're there, talk to them about feeding him wet / dry food.

I have 2 boxers and I have fed them dry food only for their entire life. One is 10 and the other 12 years old. I'm confident if I gave them wet and dry food, they won't eat the dry. It's like putting pizza and asparagus in front of a child. One thing is still going to be sitting there when they're finished. hehe.

Congrats on the puppy...I love german shepherds.

could be sore or lose teeth, they have baby teeth they lose too and it can make chewing hard food suck.

thinking about it more, it happened the same way. Lady wouldn't eat the food sent with her suddenly and then notice both canine teeth were being replaced, one was very lose n wiggly the other just starting. By time we saw a vet they were gone.

Our male German had issues with eating. Apparently some Germans can have allergies to certain fillers in the food....oats and stuff. Does he rub his face on the ground or furniture after eating? If so, it could be allergies.

We put our Germans on a RAW diet (raw beef, chicken, fish and organ meet) for a long time because it was hard to find dry food that Kain did not react too. Finally we started feeding him BLUE which has a lot less of those fillers.

I know our pitbull did nothing but sleep, eat and pee for the first couple days we had him. Seemed like after he got used to his surroundings he became more active. Can't hurt to have the vet check on your puppy though.

I'd take him to the vet for a general wellness check either way. But most likely he's fine if he's anything like our puppy. Ours came home with us and slept all day and didn't eat any dry food, so we pounded it up and she ate a little. Then we added wet food and she ate mostly just the wet food. Sound familiar?

Anyway, within a month we transitioned her to all dry food and she's perfectly happy. Young puppies are not used to eating dry food. Our puppy slept pretty much all the time when we weren't actively playing with her for the first few days. If you're worried about your puppy not eating enough just keep mixing in the wet food and break apart the dry food with a mallet or hammer for a few weeks. Then transition to wet food with full sized pieces. Then transition to just dry food.

+1 take him to the vet. We just picked up a puppy 2 weeks ago and a few days after being home he was no longer energetic. Seemed like he had a cold. And he barely ate. He most likely had kennel cough, but whatever it was it ended up giving him pnuemonia. And pnuemonia is no joke for puppies. Get Thor checked out to be safe.

As a vet, I vote get him checked out too. Young puppies that aren't fully vaccinated and dewormed are susceptible to parvo virus, giardia, intestinal parasites, and kennel cough just to name a few. Stress of a new home or new diet can result in diarrhea/vomiting too. Hypoglycemia and dehydration are bigger concerns for small puppies than big adult dogs too.

Heartworm isn't possible unless he's at least 6 months, and then still a stretch due to the 6 month life cycle of the parasite. Better to start on prevention though.

And doubt it's the teeth, unless he's already over 4 months old. First incisors (small teeth in the front) are lost ~17 weeks, then about 5 months for the canines, 6 months pre-molars and molars. Puppies typically don't even notice that this is happening, but your furniture might.
