Why would Ford need to "release" one for testing? Any magazine that wanted to could go out and buy one from a dealer. The more likely reason is that the magazines know an article containing the GT500 in 2013 trim is going to sell more volume than one pitting a car that is already a year old against one that hadn't even hit the showrooms yet.

Many people here are great enthusiasts but would make horrible marketing/business persons.

Although the Ford GT has been out of production for several years its numbers are still very close to a 2012 Vett ZR1 or Nissian GT-R. If the new Shelby can out run the ZR1 or GT-R heh it might me the best bang for the buck ever created. I am still and always will be a Camaro guy but someone give SVT a Nobel Peace Prize or something. Again, Ford boys don't keep the faith the Shelby will run with the Ford GT.

Motor Trend has the Ford GT at 3.7 sec 0 to 60 and 11.8 1/4 mile. Ok the new Shelby might hit those targets but in reality after watching the ZL1 Ignition review so does our Camaro.

I'll admit you're going to have to deal with a large increase of trolls (not that you haven't been for some time already lol), I just hope most of you continue to be real enthusiasts and accept a car for what it is, even if you don't like it.

Yet, you should agree with the comparison of the '13 Shelby being 100x more marketable than the '12ZL1 vs 12 Shelby.

marketable...yes. fair comparison...in my opinion, no. the '12 ZL1 was going after the '12 GT500. Of course Ford will come out with something better. That's why it's called rivalry. GM will answer back when they're ready. That's just how competitive market works.

I agree, and feel in the right hands the ZL1 is going to be right there with the 2013 Shelby. Although from reading the SVT propaganda today it is clear their sole purpose is to beat the ZL1 by at least a tenth of a second. With the Shelby coming out after the ZL1, if they don't what a EPIC FAIL

From the Ford web site: 2013 Mustang GT500 available Summer 2012.

It appears that the 2013 GT500 will not be available before the 2013 ZL1 is available, unlike many Ford people have been stating.

Therefore, the appropriate comparison is the 2013 ZL1 to the 2013 GT500, and not the 2012 ZL1 to the 2013 GT500.

Honestly...I could care less about the comparisons. I want a camaro...ZL1 specifically, so that's what I'm getting. If I wanted the biggest and baddest car available, I would be eternally broke and continuously disappointed.
