Legality of running technostalgia tail lights on street?

Camaro5,

Just installed my technostalgia lights. Man they look awesome!

One question though, the brake is set to rapid fire which makes a flashy strobe when the break pedal is depressed followed by a solid light in break if held.

I am in TX, think cops will harass me for this?

On what charge?

Many cruiser motorcycles, including the LEOs Harley's, have a quick burst strobe...

If there is a charge in your state, then I guess harassing means enforcing the law? If there is no verbiage that dictates strobe lamps, then on what grounds would they stop you?

...with that said, I imagine you will be fine as long as your tail lamps illuminate red and are visible in excess of 250 yards.

They are DOT approved. We have sold well into the hundreds of unit and I have yet to have anyone say anything about getting hassled about them. Unless you count people hounding them about where they got them. Keep in mind, you can turn the individual functions on and off.

i think the laws ar eyou can't have red or blue flashing on the front of your vehicle, so you don't look like an emergency vehicle to the cars in front of you. not sure about them from the rear. every cop is different though but i don't see an issue. i'm sure someone else will post on this as well

does the DOT know they strobe and turn blue? lol

I believe the only requirements for DOT is visibility over 250 or 500 yards and when illuminated are red. Strobe and color change can be restricted further with each respective state... I cannot imagine anyone being "harassed" about a quick burst strobe tail lamp.

While we are on a legality topic and we have a LEO here.....can you run any color halos on the street as long as they aren't red or blue?

What about a AAC scanner? Can that be "scanning" while we drive as long as the color does not go red or blue?

Sorry to hack OP...just been wondering this for a while.

In Florida, only Green, Red (in front of the C pillar), white (behind the A pillar) and Blue are illegal. Strobe blue and white will get you in some big doo-doo. Blue can be charged with impersonation LEO and strobe white changes traffic signals lol (restricted to ambulances/fire). As far as OPs question, I believe he is just concerned about strobed tail lamps. I don't see anyone bothering that.. that is about the only color, assuming it is behind the C pillar, won't get you into trouble. Generally, any color variation is illegal except for car shows. I keep mine on standard until the shows.

While some states may vary, Head lamps must be white and tail lamps must be red. It is probably rather uniform across the country.

I have seen two or three 5th gens in Orlando running red and green on the halos. I don't bother it, I think it is cool.. But I know a few State Troopers will tag it.

I have no idea. You would have to ask them.

If they ever say anything just tell them you tapped the break pedal a few times first lol. I know if im stopped somewhere in the road due to someone making a turn and someone is rolling up behind me i tap it a few times so i know they see me.

I'm in Lake Jackson, TX and a state trooper followed me home from the gas station, just a few blocks. He said he wasn't pulling me over, but he wasn't sure about the flashing rear lights be legal, then he left. I checked the Texas Transportation Code and there is nothing in there about flashing tail lights. Also, no mention of it during my annual vehicle inspection.

So, you are good to go, flash away. . I keep a copy of the relevent part of the Transportation Code in my glove compartment, in case I get stopped again by a curious trooper.

There are lots of cars that have blinking 3rd brake lights these days. I would imagine cops would endorse this type of stuff to wake up distracted drivers behind you!

Well I have been stopped for much less, one time a state trooper to "remind" me my vehicle registration was due in 3 months

I've noticed sometimes, police, like all people, will arbitrarily enforce rules. That is why I ask.

Thanks for all the replies, yes chase I bought them from you, and have been chased down already asking about where I bought them

I tend to think I can be stopped but probably wont be. Thankfully in Houston, Police seem to have bigger fish to fry than a kid with strobing tail lights.

Peace

Far as i know, DOT doesn't test and approve all these individual lights.

The manufacturer's/importer's product is self-certified.
