Well, since Vegas is "Money City" and there is nothing outside of it, comparing it to Atlantic City isn't really accurate or fair. Everything outside of AC is poor is only a sliver of the size of Vegas. Most of NJ is heavily populated and has MANY dealerships all over the state. Not just sand, and desert. In NJ, we have many choices; in Vegas, you probably don't. That's all I'm saying. Two different parts of the country and two different cultures. Vegas just fascilitates more insane mark-ups because of the area and probably fewer dealerships. Relax.

We have 4 dealers in the city, 4 more within a 90 minute drive, so plenty of options. The problem is too many dealers across the country think that the Camaro will make their whole year a success. If they ever get any of them it will help but way to many people will leave with a bad taste and won't be back after the malay dies down. And I am totally relaxed.

Agreed man. It's the same nonsense everywhere not just NJ or NV. Just ignore what I said. I just reacted when the thread OP said the mark up was so high and he checked all the dealerships inside Vegas. That's why I just blurted out such a broad generalization. Sorry if I upset you man. :(

Nah...I'm not upset. I do all I can to remain cool while I wait for the next 3 or 4 months for my car. I'm a proud 6 month member of the 1100 club.

I do have a solution for Chevy, the same one that Sony uses and even VW, put the cars online, let people order them and do the finance thing etc etc. The dealers will have no power to bargain up, they will have to either sell at msrp or they wont sell the car. Sony did this and their sales went up at both the factory and the dealer base. Car dealers have gotten away with the crap for years, its time to say NO. Many of you said go to another dealer, I will, but its not Vegas, so dont think that this town is somehow strage and expensive. If you buy potato chips in a casino, you will get stung, but if you go two blocks off the strip, they are the same as wherever you live. Vegas is what vegas is, no excuses. But the dealers, where ever they are need to decide if they want to be in the screw you business or they want to indeed build a business where things make sense. 10K OR anything over the price is total crap. GM sent me an email to back up the call, they are trying, they should of course, but the dealers can suck it. I want to order the car I want, on line and take delivery at a dealer, I will give the guy who checks it out and details it a quick 100 and he will be my best friend at least for a day. Just my thoughts. But we the people get taken for a ride all the time.
If you are coming to vegas, drop me a note, I will make sure you have all the chips you can eat, potato chips that is, at no charge to you. Oh did I mention I make slot machine software, if you are in town go to the Excalibur and in the middle of the casino you will an OCC bike on a pedestal, humbly, I did that, I own the license for that property, the OCC bike etc. So I know that in most cases slots take your money, if you asked me how to win I would tell you but you wont like it.
Later and thanks to all who have chatted this thing up. We do make a difference.

Great idea -- now all you have to do is travel to all 50 states and get each legislature to change their individual franchise laws! The franchise laws in all 50 states strictly prohibit the manufacturer from selling directly to the customer.

Don't like it? Call your state legislators!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen:

This subject comes up every day on the internet --

IT IS ILLEGAL FOR GM/FORD/CHRYSLER/HONDA/TOYOTA -- or any other manufacturer to tell a dealer what he or she can sell a car for.

There are only TWO instances where we can 'set' a price -

1. MSRP (mfgr. suggested retail price)
2. Special "suggested lease payment" (and there are all kinds of disclosures when that happens...)

That's it.

If the dealer wants to sell a $30,000 Camaro for one penny -- we can do nothing about it. If he wants to sell it for $3 million -- we can do nothing about it.

We want them to sell for MSRP or below -- but we can do NOTHING

Let me repeat that....

NOTHING .....

....about a dealer who wants to mark their vehicles up.

No -- we cannot 'slow down' or 'refuse' shipments. If you attempt that -- and are convicted in a court of law, you can go to jail. (ask Honda)

There are 3,900 Chevrolet dealers in the United States --

JUST SAY NO if someone asks over MSRP.

NOW - that said -- you DO realize that any car that's 'scarce' tends to get marked up -- right? Further, it appears that there is a 'state' on the west coast where dealers tend to mark every car up over MSRP........

......JUST SAY NO!

If you want to be the very first on the block to have the newest toy - most likely you're going to pay for that privilege -- it's called the "Law of Supply and Demand"

When demand outstrips supply -- prices rise.

When supply outstrips demand -- prices fall......

Isn't that because of the contracts that GM created with the dealerships? What stops GM from destroying these contracts in bankruptcy and creating company owned dealerships?

The company owning the dealership would result in a set price (yay) with accountability from GM. None of this, "We can't do anything!"

I know it's a tall order but it's not like GM really has much to lose at this point. The current system is really, really awful.

NOTE: I know it's not ever going to happen, but it really would make sense for a company to want to control the way their customers purchase and interact with their products.

Go back and read what I wrote --

Yes -- GM COULD destroy contracts with dealers if they go Chapter 11 -- which would allow GM to reduce the number of dealers - -- BUT --

(and this is what I wanted you to re-read

The franchise laws in all 50 states strictly prohibit the manufacturer from selling directly to the customer.

This is not something GM dreamed up.

Each state passed franchise laws in the early to mid-20th century........

Soooooo.........if you don't like them.....(...and GM doesn't!) -- start a ground-swell in your state to have them overturned!

So you're telling me neither Tesla nor Apple exist? Thank God!

EDIT: I mean if the franchises were all revoked and GM started their own dealerships, obviously.

Very true, but the thing is people in that certain "state on the west coast" have more money than common sense and tend to buy anything they want when they want it.
That's the main reason dealers raise the prices. Obviously it's no one's fault but the consumer's.

Like fbod said,
JUST SAY NO!!!

I'm not sure what you mean by this.........

Even if GM goes chapter 11 and all franchises are declared null and void.....there are STILL State Franchise laws ( ....I should clarify .....AUTOMOBILE Franchise laws.....) ......that prohibit ALL automobile manufacturers from selling direct to the public.

With all due respect, there's something seriously wrong with this statement. If what you say is true then the people at Dell Computers in theory should have been put behind bars years ago.

If they can do it, so can you!

(Not to mention the fact that your new owners apparently can "trump" any state laws that they want to at any time for any reason!)

Yes, I'm being sarcastic but I'm tired of hearing things are impossible when other people do them.
