all too true. Theyre way behind on the ball on this one. By the time they actually hit showrooms we will almost be halfway done with 2012

The current crop of GT500 owners have been screaming for a '12 vs '12 comparison. We all know the '12 ZL1 vs '13 GT500 will come and are eager for those results as well.

2) It was assumed the ZL1 wouldn't be able to out-race the Boss Mustang by many, including MotorTrend, the people who did the comparison....it makes sense, then, that they'd try to give the advertised "Track Camaro" a challenge with the advertised "Track Mustang".

I don't think many in the Ford camp saw it that way.
While there may be a valid argument that the Boss is more a pure track car (no supercharger, etc) I think there are few that that didn't believe that a much more powerful car, equipped with IRS, some fantastic dampers, and much more wheel/tire, could outrun Ford's best five liter car. It was an interesting comparison but it really wasn't much of a surprise.

3) Magazines like to generate attention and sales...Having two GT500 vs ZL1 articles out within a year wouldn't very effective because there's no guarantee the GT500 will upset the comparison...and without that as a headline, the model year difference would be lost on many. But by writing a Boss vs ZL1, then a GT500 vs ZL1...that will catch some peoples' eye, because it's "new".

Definitely some validity there. Undoubtedly, there will still be '12 vs '12 writeups coming down the pike.

I wonder if GM will ever fix their model year thing.
You buy a new 2012 ZL1 and it's already 4-5 months old.

That's like saying the ZL1 makes an SS look like a V6 camaro.

I don't think a ZL1 will murder a 2011 or 2012 GT500 in a straight line. At the ring (since that is all that matters because everyone here is a professional road racer) we don't know what is faster. However, I personally think the ZL1 is faster around the ring compared to a 2012 GT500.

What's wrong with 3V GT's, other than being slow?

and to address the question asked above, it's not about comparing a new model to an old model. The goal here is to bring both top dogs out and have a shoot out.
We already did, we brought the faster 2012 Boss LS Ford's self proclaimed factory race ready car,

Actually, its Ford that is out of line with the rest of the industry with model years, not GM. Most automakers start their new models in the middle of the summer so that they start to arrive at dealerships late summer and are there in quantity by the end of the year. So when 2012 started, lo and behold ... there are 2012 cars on the lot.

To me, it doesn't make any sense at all that you will be able to buy a 2013 car in April of 2012.

But having a "new" car for a whole year instead of a half a year or less seems more in line.
but that is just my opinion of course.

I buy a 2012 car, it's april/may of 2012, my car will only be the current year for 6-7 more months.

doesn't it feel better knowing you just bought a car that will be the current year for a whole year?

I agree. Typically, orders used to be placed in June to get August/September deliveries on the new "new" cars. I ordered a 2008 G37S in June of 07, got it in August of 07. Couldn't order it before then. April of 2012, IMO is too early to call that car a 2013.

That's why 12s are available in August of 2011.

I disagree.

For the sake of argument, let's pretend your correct here, by your own logic, the ZL1 is still eight or nine months late. It should have been here last summer, not this spring. Ford isn't that far ahead of the rest of the industry. New Mustangs typically arrive in April or May or the preceding year. Likewise, for Subarus as well. My first WRX was a MY2002, delivered in March 2001, one of the first to be delivered.

Additionally, in the case of the ZL1, it seems GM is the one that isn't following itself or the rest of the industry. Anyone care to guess when the first MY2010 Camaros were delivered?

April 2009.

Using that as a benchmark as well as the rest of the industry leads me to conclude the ZL1 is almost an entire calendar year late to be considered a MY2012. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if GM did this purposely so the '12 ZL1 would be compared to the '12 GT500 and not the '13.

I saw the motor trend video where they said ZL1 launch control is just more consistent. But when he revved to 2k and let off the clutch with proper speed and feathered the throttle depending on traction he received a 3.8 0-60 speed. Faster than even the automatic

I find it hard to believe anybody thinks the current 12 gt500 could best the zl1 though. This is why the Ford guys bring up the 13 right away. I really can't wait to see the zl1's ripping off low 12's in capable hands, and high 11's with drag radials. I would hope a pulley swap and intake should get 11's on stock tires.
I have heard some stories about broken cts-v's locally though. Hopefully the Camaro has some key upgrades.
