I'd be surprised if the GT500 doesn't own the ZL1. It's expected based on the specs. Given the same basic weight, the GT500's better launch control, and more power, the drag times will not be very close. Road course times will be comparable.

The ZL1 was an engine RPO for an all aluminum Can-Am racing engine that was placed in 69 9560 COPO Camaros and 2 production Corvettes in 1969. The 9560 Camaros became legendary over the years as the pinnacle in high performance Camaros.

The original first generation Z28s were high rev'ing Trans-Am racers. The Z28s were under rated at 290 horsepower, and they weren't perceived as being the absolute pinnacle in muscle car performance.

I believe that Chevrolet chose the ZL1 name to evoke the images of the legendary 9560 COPO Camaros as pinnacle of muscle car performance, while leaving the Z28 name plate available as a strictly track racing oriented option, which would be somewhat less plush and street-able than the ZL1.

I am surprised we have not heard any more information, stats, performance figures for the '13 GT500 given it is due out in the next couple-few months. What is the expected launch date?
