I'm not a big nascar fan, but when they went with that car of tomorrow thing, didn't they pretty much go to a standardized platform?

The presser says NEW nameplate... Can't be Malibu. The Chevy 'SS' (holden commodore or caprice) has long been said (and confirmed by execs) to be coming for 2013 MY. Chevelle or some other new name, most likely.

I don't understand the "new nameplate" comment then, as it indicates new to the mfg, not NASCAR

In cup it'll probably be the Malibu or the new Impala replacement. In Nationwide series probably Camaro or Cruze. The Mustang and Challenger can race Nationwide series because there are basic COT cars w/ Mustang & Challenger fascias on the front. It was an initiative by NASCAR to help make the Nationwide series a little more distinct from Cup series. It'd be interesting if Chevy went with the Camaro in nationwide series because then it'd only be Toyota that would run a sedan based car.

Ok, but neither if those are new nameplates, I heard rumor that it will not be the Impala, but it is getting a redesign nonetheless.

Ford does not use the Mustang in their Cup cars.
Nationwide and Cup cars are not the same.

Hendrick also heaped praise on the Canadian auto workers who build the Camaro ZL1 and who will build the 2013 Impala SS at the Oshawa plant.


And he said that if NASCAR is to continue growing it must start putting race cars on the race tracks that more closely resemble what consumers can buy at Chevrolet dealerships.


That is the main reason GM decided against putting the Camaro in the Nationwide Series to compete against Ford’s Mustang and the Dodge Challenger last season.


“I know that GM said if (the Camaro) couldn’t be relatively the same as the showroom car they didn’t want to put it in the series,” Hendrick said.
But he said he is excited that the 2013 SS model will, in fact, almost mirror what will be available at dealerships.


“We do have a 2013 Impala SS in our shop,” he said. “Actually Kasey Kahne is testing it today. I have seen the production car and the race car and they are identical.


“You can definitely tell it is a Chevrolet. It will be a rear wheel drive, fuel injected V8.”

Take that for what it is...Hendrick is saying Impala. Which makes sense, as the 2014 Impala's launch will be early next year, right in time for the 2013 NASCAR season.
