Sell my 5th Gen for an older camaro?
I was thinking about selling my 2010 SS, and buying either a 1st gen classic for around 15K. Or a 4th gen for around 2-3K and redoing the motor.
1st Gen -------- I thought it fun to find one in decent shape and have fun modding it. 1) 4:10 rear end 2) 4 speed trans 3) $5000 in rebuild motor with cam 4) Electrical 5) Carb 6) Basically the under the hood compenents 7) Repair rust 8) Sand and paint 9) Interior or 4th Gen -------- 1) Rebuild the motor with performance parts spending $3500 2) Basically provide maintenance on parts that break 3) Hopefully the interior is not bad, being a 4th gen. |

That new 525 HP crate LS3 with a retail of $8900 seems like an awesome motor.

A first gen is fun to look at, fun to tinker with, but not much of a driver.
They are not comfortable, not safe, not reliable, in no way comparable to a fifth gen. They just don't depreciate like a new car so there is that. |

I think it is a bad idea. It's like going from a bluray to a beta tape. Step back in technology, no air bags, bad suspension, no cruise, air, power windows....this list goes on and on.
If you kept your Gen 5 and got a Gen 1, I would be for that. |

Only reason I decided against getting a '69 Camaro is because there are no airbags. Or I would have gotten it.
But after I was in a bad collision about 6-7 years ago where someone rear ended me doing 75 when I was doing 25, flipping me once and spinning me 1 and a half times after slamming into other cars as well; I know the airbags on that 2005 Honda Accord saved my life. Now I won't get a car without amazing safety ratings like the Camaro. No way I'd put anyone in my family, or my gf, in a car that didn't have airbags. But back on topic, if you get the 1st gen and don't use it as a daily driver, I can see how that might be a little different.

I agree with the theme here, a 1st Gen is not going to be a good daily driver even if you mod it. If you're getting it to play with, then go for the 1st Gen over the 4th.

I would never trade the 2010 for either of those. Although i'd love to have a 1st gen for a cruiser or a 4th gen for a racer. Plus both of those are gonna be money traps.
Personally, i'm going to pay off my 2011 and then look into a "weekend" car. Unless gas is outrageous, then this will become my weekend car and I'll get a moped or something for work. lol |

The first gen would be nice for a weekend cruise and car shows not for a daily driver for the same reasons that have been noted. The 4th gen may be a fun car to do a complete re-build but I don't think worth selling my 5th. Save for the 4th gen since you can get one cheap and just make it a side project that every time you get a little extra money put it aside then even...... well you get what I'm saying. Keep the 5th or get a 2nd gen, my favorite.

1st gens aren't good for every day, great for sporatic use on weekends etc. But the choice is yours. Depending on how picky you are a 1st gen is going to cost big bucks for a nice one. Unless you restore yourself, its very expensive.

First of all you need to answer a few things for yourself.
1) is the SS a daily driver or a weekend toy? 2) what is the amount you're looking at putting into either option? If the SS is a daily driver, then keep it. Neither one of your options is viable for a daily driver and you will end up regretting your decision if you do it. If it's a weekend toy then I would get a 1st gen however you need to understand what you're getting into. You will NOT find a 1st gen in decent shape for $15k. Around here you are lucky to find a body and frame for just $15k, I'm talking no engine, no tranny, no suspension, and no interior. Fixing up a 1st gen is far from cheap and you will easily put $40-$45k or more into one and not have it looking and running as nice as a new SS. |

It depends on what you want to use your car for. If you want a daily driver, the 5th gen is the best choice. If you want a weekend toy/project car, the 1st gen is best (and a good investment in the future). 4th gens are a great platform for a strip/road race project car. Get a LS1 car ('98-'02) at the very least.
