My son's 2004 Pontiac Sunfire (that used to be my daily driver) has had many issues with the headlights, frequently oddball behaviour caused by partial breaks and shorts in the wires. That car's wiring harness consists of really small wiring that doesn't even look like it should be used outdoors. Looks like it belongs on a train set. It was repaired under warrantee at least three times, and at least once I had to pay for. Right now the car has "custom" do it yourself wiring and switches for the low beams and fog lights.

Sounds like your car may have the same crappy wiring... at least it is under warranty.

Even more confusing:...why do they blink at all...???? my 2002 never did that?

My fog lights would come on to indicate lock/unlock bu tthe head lights always remained in the stationed position?

Check the owners manual and see if that is a selectable part of the courtesy light user programming.

Your headlight gears are stripping. Here is a link I found at LS1 tech, it has a step by step how to fix the problem. Many of my friends that were in a car club in Texas that I was in had TA's has this problem, there is an aluminium gear upgrade for the flip up lights.

The link.

i was pretty sure the grinding sound was the headlight gear but i do not understand why the lights started to open and close when i lock/unlock the doors or why they open when i only turn on the parking lights. very odd...

Pop the motors apart and flip the gear 180 degrees. The headlights on the Trans Am/Formula/Firebird measures amperage (resistence) to know when the headlight is fully up and fully down (controlled by the BCM). When a plastic gear in the headlight motor gets stripped, the system keeps powering the motors and thats why you hear a jackhammer/grinding type noise coming from the stripped headlight motor when you lock/unlock the doors or when you turn on/off the headlights.

Hope that explaines it.
