My understanding is that for any give octane grade of gasoline, the only difference is the additives. Those additives are "cleaning agents" only.
Gasoline is distributed by pipeline, meaning that 10K gallons in one end can immediately be 10K gallons out of the other end regardless of who put that 10K gallons in the pipe that is being drawn off. Is that correct?

I posted above, about the change, and its a fact ive noticed in person. Also I Run LFX not LLT engines. Might not be any Diff, But still im not saying i gained HP and my car went faster ... blah blah blah, i am just saying my car started losing gas faster then when i was on premium and i drive in city regular speed limit maybe a little above.

Also my car is M6 not A6, incase someone asks, and There are 3 shells around me 1 is alwaus 20 - 30c higher in fuel so i just go to the same shell always for gas because it's the cheapest out of all of them, but the Kroger / H.E.B gas was around 2.94$ or little less from what i saw little back, so discount does come from grocerie shopping, and i do have the 10c off Shell Gas by using Kroger Discount. But from what i've seen i will a void any Grocer Store Gas. Nice Info on All. But most likely the Shell Regular gas is what i will be using for a while, until close to end of 2012 then i get my SS ^_^.

What I understand is that at delivery they flush the lines between "name brands" (each with it's special sauce of additives), where the contents of the lines contain a mix of additives and that is what Merit, etc. trucks fill up with.

Here is a quick summary of how it works...
1) Fuel comes down the pipeline to a terminal 2) Stations get there fuel and add their additive while it is being put in the tanker truck 3) Each station has different additives based on quantity and quality. A Shell, Mobil, etc adds alot more additive and better additives than a low tier station. A low tier station only adds the absolute minimum required by law. * I meant to say in a previous post that the cheap gas is nearly un-additized. The additive packs mainly contain detergents and corrosion inhibitors. Some stations may also add combustion modifiers or other small add-ons. Top-Tier testing for the additives has a much different requirement than the low level additives. The test is based on intake valve deposits. Top-Tier additives need to produce 90% less deposits than base/un-additized fuel. |

haven't read the whole thread yet, but just have to say; i have been getting slightly better mileage with super. and i calculate my mileage by miles per dollar to account in the different gas prices. i have seen about the same miles per dollar regardless of super or regular. so i run super because it runs just a bit better as well. try these calcs yourself and see if it makes much difference.

Car companies got tired of paying warranty claims on fuel system problems from crap gas. So they got their fuel and lube engineers together and came up with recommended minimum levels of detergents that their research showed is needed to keep injectors from clogging. A bit more than just paying to join the club, they had to certify the levels of detergents they use met the minimum requirements of the car companies that started the top tier testing. The financial aspect was driven by car companies savings on warranty costs. The gas/oil industry wasn't regulating a quality standard for detergent levels that was adequate for preventing injector deposits, so the car companies came up with their own way to make the better gas brands stand out. But it's a free world, everyone is entitled to buy the cheapest gas they can find. The service industry enjoys the extra revenue from all the fuel system repairs. I know I made a fortune cleaning injectors from Kroger and Costco gas. |

Just curious, who said (with authority) that the LLT and/or LFX engines aren't capable of advancing timing for super unleaded (yielding more advance w/o pre-ignition than when using lower octane)?
