I'm sorry.... can someone clarify? Are we talking about moving out of your parents house and living on your own, or investing in a house?

If the latter, that is not always the best way to go in this economy. The market sucks and banks are awful to deal with. No shame in renting.

However, I think we are talking about the previous. In that case, we're talking about man-ing up and moving out and living on your own, then yes - owning an expensive sports car while living with your parents is dumb. I'm sorry, it is.

I was out on my ass at 18. Had to sell my 94 camaro, work my ass off and take care of myself. I wasn't forced out, but living with either of my parents would have been unbearable. I wanted to be an adult and take care of myself. So yes, owning a fancy/expensive sports car instead of living independent IS dumb. I'm sorry, but that is reality. Get your priorities straight. After I man-ed up, sold my car, worked hard and got a good job, I got my own place AND a new camaro.

Sitting in your parent's basement collecting car payments is not smart. You will probably never move on in life, and you'll be "that guy" playing World of Warcraft, 75-100 lbs overweight, in your parent's basement in your mid 40s.

i understand that financially this is the wrong way to go about it BUT WHATS THE FUN IN THAT?!?!
i would rather be having tons of fun in my younger years
having a camaro at 40 with a wife and kids (im assuming) is probably not as fun at being single with a camaro at 23

i will move out and i will have a house... i just postponed that a year or two to have tons of fun, and drive a nice car. what good is a house without anyone to share it with (g/f, wife, kids, ect...) i work 24 hour shifts and when im off, im RARELY home so what good is a house going to do me right now when all i do is sleep and shower in one, and nothing else

i didnt buy this car for anyone else besides me, nor to "show off" yes i like it when people comment, but u will never hear me bring up the fact that i drive a camaro in conversation unless that question is asked (i get the "your just trying to show off" all the time)

this is my point, justified or not this is what i chose and im very happy with it... what i really need to do is get a studio in downtown chicago... then the possibilities will be endless

KEEP THE CAR!!!!Enjoy it!!!!
pay it off and then buy the house!!!

oh, word of advice from my own experience.
don't sell the car ever unless you can afford a new one to replace it.
this way you will end up with a classic car eventually and property over time.
It took me from the mid nineties, when I sold my '85 z28 until 2011 when I purchased my vert.
other things in life will change your priorities....wife, kids, mortgage etc.
that's why I say keep the car.pay it off and then the property.

Buying a house "Sounds" like a great idea.

Buying a house is only logical if:

1) you have a very high credit score and you can get a fixed interest rate below 5 percent.

2) you have every intention to live in that house for a very long time because once you buy it, chances are you will NEVER be able to sell it and get your money back. It's a BUYERS market. Houses are selling for 50K and 100K less than what they cost before. You can get a great deal, but be careful about getting trapped living somewhere and then regret it because you can't escape.

3) If your job is unstable, or you think you might be moving around to different places/different states to find a job, don't get tied down with a house that you won't be able to sell unless you PAY SOMEONE to buy it. Don't assume you can easily rent it out also.

4) FOR YOUNG GUYS, ITS important to "get it out of your system", and get some kind of FUN CAR. Everyone does that.

Deep down, most young guys know "when" it's time to settle down. They usually FIRST get married, or get someone pregnant, stuff like that.

5) ITS OKAY to live at home with your parents. I would rather my kid be with me than out doing something stupid.

IF IT TURNED INTO THE MOVIE "STEP BROTHERS", THEN yes, they would need to get out.

The guy living at home needs to change careers

It sounded like the "guy" living at home (SummoneR) is a degreed Architect.

He admitted that 40 percent of people in his field are out of work.

the ONLY WAY he will be able to get out of the house is to change careers.

SOCIETY DOES NOT NEED that many architects and INTERIOR designers. THESE FIELDS ARE MORE LUCRATIVE:

Bachelor of Science Mechanical/Electrical/chemical/Civil Engineering
Teaching at a High School
Nursing School
Law School.......WORK in the Health Care Industry
Computer Science, Computer Programming, Learn Ladder Logic C++
JOIN the Police Department
Chriprator School
Chef School

DONT GIVE UP ON LIFE BECAUSE YOU are in a FIELD that has no JOBS

FIND AN AREA where there is a NEED.

EXAMPLE:
WORK FOR NIKE. THEY SELL SNEAKERS FOR 200 BUCKS TO IDIOTS WHO DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL. YOU SHOULD MAKE A HEFTY SALARY.

WORK FOR APPLE. THEY SELL EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE DEVICES TO PEOPLE WHO USE THEM FOR USELESS PURPOSES. You will be RICH.

WORK FOR IN-AND-OUT-BURGER: THERE ARE ALWAYS 900 CARS IN THE DRIVE THRU, 24 HOURS A DAY. YOU WILL BE WEALTHY.

WORK FOR LOCKHEED MARTIN: THEY MIGHT ALLOW YOU TO WORK ON THEIR CRAFTS THAT FLY TO THE MOON IN ONE HOUR.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

A couple years ago I had these two options;

A) buy a nice car now for $300 a month for 5 years and save everything I can and buy a nice house afterwards or

B) buy a pos run down house and spend almost everything I make every month on the mortgage, utilities and up keep and not able save up anything for emergencies or go shopping and live dirt poor for 15 years much less be able to ever buy a nice car.

I choose option A and I'm glad I did. By the time my car is paid off I'll have enough money saved up for a down payment and the income to buy almost any house in my area that's up for sale.

I did the opposite. bought as early as I could, and struggled for a couple years. now, I'm over half way paid off, will be paid off and living mortgage free before I'm 50, paying about 1/2 what mortgages and rent are going for now, and can use that money to pretty much buy whatever I want. and becase I've been enjoying that "locked in" payment for the last 17 years, my wife and I have been able to stash a six figure sum into our retirement accounts. life will be very good in 13 years, and worry free at retirement.

I take the other side of this when my friend got hours cut back at his work, still lives with his parents at the age of 28, but has a 2007 Nissan 350z with $487.00 per month payments @ 17.85% a.p.r. for 4 more years because he refinanced it to get his payments lowered from $678.00. What a fool, this friend definitely should just let the bank take it because it is only worth $17k and he still owes $24k. The OP should just keep it. You can always sell it later. My same friend had a repo on a 1999 Trans Am in 2002, but he just won't learn.

I'm with this guy. He's right, it must be an age thing. My parents never would have stood for me living at home at that age and neither would I when I had kids. They said "As long as you're living here you'll do things our way." I didn't like doing things their way so I moved out when I was 17, joined the Air Force, and never moved back. Back then, everone wanted to be out on their own so they could do what they wanted. Things are different now, though. "Kids" live at home until they are 30 and do what they want starting at 5. Obama even fixed it so they can stay on their parents insurance until they are 26.

Wow, I sound like an old guy. Guess that's because I am. Anyway, enjoy your Camaro and don't take it personally. Things are just different these days.
