My first run-in with a dealership today

I removed my stock spoiler to clean out all the dirt and debris that has collected there and to make sure the ralley stripes were holding up well under there.

As you can imagine, with this high quality GM paint, there was damage! The pain is trashed under there.

I ended up losing one of the nuts that holds the spoiler on so I went to the local GM dealership to buy a nut and to ask about the paint being trashed.

The service guy immediately said he didn't know and went to get the service manager.

The SM comes out and compliments the car and sees my window sticker and asks if I like AR-15 rifles. We chat for a minute then get down to business.

He said there was a recent GM bulletin about Synergy Green not matching when doing re-sprays or repairs so he was worried about that.

He then asks if I'm the original owner and I tell him that "No, I am the second owner" to which he replies that the trunk lid might have "already been painted by the previous owner" and then tries to convince me that there is a difference in the trunk lid and quarter panel in the shade of green and the orange peel and I disagree. I JUST put a fresh coat of sealant on the car this morning after another detail so I can see the trees, the highway and cars driving by in the paint, there is NOT a difference.

He says the body shop they use will come look at it tomorrow morning and if they deem the trunk lid paint to be original paint, GM will eat the re-paint fees and they will even paint my aftermarket spoiler for a "Small charge" but if the trunk lid has already been re-painted, all bets are off and they will not pay for anything.

What would you like to bet that somehow the guy is going to tell me that the trunk lid has already been re-painted before and they will not repaint my trunk lid?

Exactly.

Pics for reference:

If it was repainted under warranty it should show on the service history they have access to that info through GM network. If it's collision repair then it should show up on carfax. That's just my thoughts on it. don't let them BS you,the squeeky wheel gets the grease. Just be a pain in their as_ .

I have never heard of anyone removing their spoiler to clean under it but there is a first time for everything I guess.
You would not have even known about this if you did not remove the spoiler so it must have covered up all the paint defects.
If it were me,I would use something to cover the bare metal to prevent rust, reattach the spoiler and move on with life. Not worth respraying the whole trunk to fix an area that is hidden anyways especially if this color is so hard to match.

In my small bit of experience the factory primer is grey in color. Most repair shops use vari prime which is yellow in color. I'd say most likely it's factory paint. When the expert comes they will know best.

Yeah I bought an aftermarket spoiler and will be installing it this Saturday. I had a local guy install the stripes. I helped him remove the spoiler 2 months ago when he installed the stripes. The paint was trashed when we removed it then. I actually forgot about it until today.

Yeah I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new aftermarket spoiler covers all that crap. If so, I'll probably just touch it up and move on.

If not, I'll need to have the trunk lid painted anyway I guess.

A neighbor of mine's nephew had problems with his spoiler from the start...not sure if his was a 10 or 11...but he told me that they did screw them up, installed them incorrectly or forgot washers or spacers...anyway they repainted his trunk and spoiler (took them twice to get it right)...and remounted his spoiler correctly...He looked at mine and said I was fine, no problems...

Looks like yours might have been bad from the get-go...might have been a dealer re-paint, but looks like they botched the job of remounting the spoiler.

Don't take NO or the BS from the dealer, he hasn't a leg to stand on..............and even if the car has had a previous service bulletin trunk lid/spoiler repaint. It extends to the new owner so long the warranty is in effect. If the second repaint fails...................then a third, forth, fifth and so on would be applicable under the same warranty. Just saying.........................stick to you're demands and desires, they are reasonable.

It would be cool if the Spoiler was simply part of the trunk lid itself, and not removable.

Like: for cars with spoiler, you get a specific trunk lid. no gaps, no crevices. no chipped paint.
