Don't mean to "pour gas"(lol) onto the gas-debate fire, but after being a little convinced by some of the posts that one brand might actually be "better" than another...Now, that brand is the worst one, don't use it! (lol)...I think I'm gonna stick with my original opinion that its all the same!...If the Shell truck goes to the Kroger after delivering fuel to the Shell station....I still really doubt they give a darn whose brand of fuel they pick up at the loading rack...If every station exclusively used its own brand, the cost of transport nationwide to do that would make the price per gallon astronomically higher than it is now...

I recall seeing a History Channel show once about all this distribution thing...they all use the same computer tracking center to monitor how much they put in...where it goes and whose comes out at any given time...nobody knows...lol

If one brand or octane makes you think your car runs better, fine...If your car runs to your satisfaction with non-major brands, fine...Certainly, specialty fuels, racing fuels are available, and perform as advertised...for a price.

Slam me if you want, this debate is nothing new...just to me shows the success of advertising and marketing.

Next is the debate over whether they really carry three different octanes in the tankers, or just fill up all the underground tanks with 87.

I put the highest available 91 or 93....its so damn expensive anyway it dosent really matter IMO. My last (well, first for this car) fillup was $70!...All I can do is drive less and stop flooring it.

No issues here with my daily driver. Lol. I did drive my camaro 60 miles to work and back today and I peeled out at every stop sign with premium gas at $4.59 a gallon. Ouch. Well worth it though.

1) Higher octane in a V6 reduces the knock Retard thus reduces timing. Based on scans, the V6 does produce KR with 87 octane but its still safe to use. Hence why the manual says use 87. Using 93 octane will KR less and cause the computer to reduce timing less but not by much. Anything you noticed regarding MPG and power is either placebo, change in driving, or there was some serious KR happening.

2) 93 octane isn't cleaner. It has the same detergents as 87. Now does it reduce emissions because it doesn't explode as easily? I doubt it.

3) Higher octane doesn't mean you're doing something better for your car besides the reduced KR. It means it doesn't explode as easily if compressed or cause knocking easier. That's all.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-e...question90.htm

4) The fuel tanker truck has compartments to carry 87 and 93 (or 91 depending on your area) and pumps them into two tanks at the station. Some tanks have more compartments. 89 is made by the pumps by mixing the two.

4) Its not about "gas is gas" but how its kept. The pump station has a filter. A county audit is done to make sure stations don't use blanks. But how often their changed is another question. That's why I only go to a good gas station.

Are you wasting money using 93? Under normal driving conditions, not flooring it, and the engine is fine, then yes. If you're flooring it or going to the track, I don't know if 93 would help 1/4 times but it wouldn't hurt.

If you feel bad pumping 87, just go to the front of the car, stare at it and ask it will it be ok with 87. That feeling you get when you realize what you're doing will make you feel ok to pump 87. I'm not being sarcastic. Its what I did...but I still use 93 at COSTCO.
