I lived at home until I was 25, which was such a blessing because I couldn't find a job after college right away, working in a crappy economy, making absolutely nothing. This gave me the ability to save up so I could put a HUGE chunk down on a house. I bought my first house in May, capitalizing on a buyers market. I bought a house in May that was a foreclosure.. built in 2007 and sold for over $250k brand new. I got it for 60% off of that and I put just under 30k down on the house, because I was ABLE to live at home and save. My mortgage is less than some peoples car payments.

Now, I also got a new job once the economy "sort of" picked up, and I wanted to run out and buy my 2SS but my dad said "you go, or I get to drive the car on the weekends...up to you". So I went.

Yeah but working 75 hrs a week isn't a trip either, I did have a 3 mos layoff as well where I was lucky enough to have my parents help on some utilities once or twice.

Also... This thread was at the top of the list. Hahahaha didn't even look at the OP date!

"anything with wheels depreciates" ... Maybe at first, but tell that to a '69 camaro that crosses the auction block @ $40k... Keep in mind they sold from dealership at 5k(?) or thereabouts. As for the house idea, talk to the people who lost their money in real estate investments in the last couple years... Just sayin'

Besides, 40k isn't much to buy a house nowadays

Keep in mind that if you calculate the inflation rate, it has depreciated.

WOW talk about reviving a thread from the dead... Then it just ignited.

A lot has happened since my last post, I have sold two of my three vehicles, and I have started my own business, PC repair, Architectural consulting, custom built PC's etc. Going back to school at the time and still today is not an option. I looked into going back to school, a Bachelors in graphic design with an emphasis on Web Design would run over $40,000. I just paid off $40k in school loans total for Architecture, a career I love, what would be the point. It's not always about the money, even though this year will be my second to most profitable year in my life.

I have worked hard on rebuilding my credit these last few years, and I will be looking to buy a house of my own within the year hopefully. Still trying to decide on a general location.

I find your comment about society not needing Architects... interesting, almost to a point of insulting, right because any Joe Schmoe can design Hospitals and Schools and Prisons. Unfortunately these three things have either some budgeting issues, especially here in CA. Or in the case of Healthcare, hospitals have the money, they are just unwilling to spend it right now in the looming shadow of Obama's Failcare plan. There was a time not too long ago when there were not enough Architects. Kind of like Nurses and Teachers today.

Police department being lucrative made me laugh, I considered going to school and applying for the FBI they won't take anyone older than 40, by the time I finish school I'd be over 40, they don't make squat, neither does the PD around here... Plus it takes a certain type of person for that job, along with Any Medical related field, nursing etc. Like I said I love Architecture, though I would have rather have gone into 3D design etc. in hind sight. These fields align with my talents. I will just wait it out, like I said, I am not doing to bad on my own obviously. I do plan to return to a large firm once things begin to turn around again.

Also I never gave up on life. I am still breathing aren't I?
Working for Nike or In-N-Out LMAO. I would if I had to to survive of course, but those jobs are hardly career jobs. I have considered working in a Cafe like I did in College part time to supplement my time consulting, and it's an enjoyable job, meeting new people and interacting with them, much less stressful than Architecture.

My ideal job, if I did not have to make a living doing it, i.e. if I was rich and did not need to work. I would build furniture, I love working with wood, building things with it.

Exactly. However, owning stock or franchises in those companies might be a good idea.

My house depreciated $150K. I say your Camaro is a better investment. Lol. Enjoy it and rent a place with a garage for it.

My house last 70% of its value and was never going to recover. My Camaro puts a smile on my face 2 years going. Win for the Camaro.

Buy a house buy a car or bike pay it all off?? In the end we all die and the shit you just payed off belongs to someone else anyway.

You live once, live it responsible treat others with respect, and most of all make your self happy, and don't worry about what others think..

I say living at your parents house is a great way to save money, but that mon ey should be saved for a house! How will you ever move out?

I lived with my parents till I was 23, I saved every penny I could, bought a house, got a new job, and a few months later i am buying my dream car

Last I checked you needed a million dollars in liquid assets to own a Mc Donald's though.

Being a manager isn't bad of course like the GM etc. And In-N-Out does pay more than most jobs of the same nature but you get my point as I do yours.

Sad but true! I have a friend who lost $100,000 in his house and he got a divorce so they had to short sell... sad.
