2012 camaro. Which engine will last better LFX V6 or L99 V8?
Hello, I just signed on as a member.
After just having my Lincoln LS V8 break a cam chain(link snapped into) and bending all the valves on the left bank, at only 140,000 miles, and after having cam chain guide/shoe replaced 15,000 miles befor this happened(shop said the chain was fine when had this work done) I'm in the hunt for a new car. I am considering the Camaro with the LFX 3.6 DOHC V6 or the Camaro SS with L99 V8. Also looking at the Dodge Challenger with the Hemi. I can get the Challerger with a Hemi for close to what Chevy wants for the Camaro V6. The Camaro V6 is a little more within my price range, but the DOHC has me worried. I have not found much info on the engine as it seems it's a new engine. Was wondering if anyone here has bought a 2012 camaro V6 and logged a lot of miles on it yet. Enough to tell if the cam chain is holding up. FWIW, In the far past I had a 1969 Chevelle SS 396/375 with M21 CR 4 spd, and 12 bolt Posi. This Lincoln LS V8 3.9 Litre 250 hp, has left me with a distaste, and loathing for DOHC engines. IMO this engine should have mad it to 200,000 miles at least. Should I , or should I not, buy about the 2012 Camaro with a V6 DOHC LFX V6 engine?? Is it more likely that the L99 V8 be a better candidate to make it to the 200,000 PLUS milage mark? Not looking to buy expensive engine parts anytime soon. I'm looking for engine longevity here. Thanks In Advance Guys! |

Get ready for a million people to tell you to get an SS
![]() I can't help much, as I have an LLT V6 in mine; my aunt got over 200,000 miles out of this same engine in her Cadillac though! Good luck making the decision. I will say if you are used to big V8's, the V6 is very peppy but you may miss the torque.

I have put on 49K on my 2010 Camaro. No problems at all.
But if you can get a Challenger with the 5.7L HEMI for the same price as a V6 Camaro, I'd get the Challenger. The 5.7L can go up to 300K easy. It is a gorgeous looking car. |

I like the looks of the Challenger a tad better. But read online where 2004 5.7 hemis had an oiling problem with crankshaft causing rods to come through block/oil pan,(thrown rods at idle? LOL)
Have not found out if that problem has been addressed/fixed since 2004. Although I would presume it had. I also prefer the Camaro SS V8 over the V6. but it comes with so many other options as standard equipment, that the price is a bit more than I'd like. Seems the days of ordering a "light",sparsely optioned Camaro V8 are looong gone. Once ya get the V8, every other option comes along for the ride. |

. It definately look looks like your trying to sell the OP on buying a V6 model. Personally I believe the OP should buy what he can afford and not necessasarily as SS ......This from one of those million SS supporters.

The lincoln cam chain failure makes me hesitant to buy another DOHC engine. Plus the LFX is a new version with bigger valves and a few other mods compared to the one the Caddy had, if I understood what I read correctly. from what I understand it's a new engine. Anyone can verify that? or has the LFX been around a year or two?

IMO, the 6 would probably last longer. less HP so less stress on everything. Last edited by jd10013; 03-29-2012 at 08:40 PM. |

I'd prefer the 18" tires when new tire time came around. 19" & 20" tires are quite expensive.
the 18" tires are a bit more reasonably priced aren't they? I'm looking for longevity as opposed to a road burner. Only considering the V8 for it's much shorter timing chain. BTW, exactly what type CS to cam chain does the V8 have? A true roller chain or the V type multi link one? PoPo is everywhere it seems these days. The brembos, and stiffer susp sounds nice, but the V6 one I test drove rode pretty good IMO |

I'd prefer the V8 with 18" tires/wheels, standard brakes if they are capable of stopping the V8( I presume they can't?), auto trans,, black leather interior with the standard v6 stereo, and power seats, & rear view camera, and let's not forget the 4 gauges extra on console. The brembos & 19/20" wheels, and 185 speedo don't really interest me. Max speed limit here in NC is only 65 anyway. And heavily patrolled. Sure they look good, and most likely perform very well. but I'm not going to use them. I'm lucky to even have a driver's license after owning my rather modded 1969 Chevelle SS 396 with M21 CR 4 spd/12 bolt 3:55 posi & 2 slightly engine modded Harley Davidsons LOL. If I hadn't paid 10,000 bux, I would'nt have them now AAMOF LOL I hhad a bad habit of outrunning the NCHP for fun on Saturday nights with the Chevelle. Needless to say those days are over now. |

Wait until August and Get a blowout 2012 1SS non RS model. You can add the 4 pack for cheap afterward and order a set of leather seats from SLP on ebay for $550. Then sell your cloth ones. This will be exactly what your looking for at the best price. At that time probably as cheap as you can get a 2LT for right now. When i bought mine i got a 2011 1SS/RS Auto with premium audio , factory stripes, premium mats & trunk mat and dealer tinted windows for $34,240 out the door. |

I've got them down to $27,490.00 + taxes & fees on a 1LS and add leather seats, by a trim shop for $1120.00 and a rear view camera in mirror for $480.00, add the $499.00 for dealer prep(too much IMO) & 118.95 for tags
Grand Total to drive away is $29,707.95 Does that sound like a good deal for a 2012 camaro v6? Total is |
