Roto-Fab CAI gas mileage

Alright so before I bought my cold air intake I looked around for gas mileage numbers. Finally I decided they were all pretty much comparable, but being the researcher that I am.....I couldn't let it go.

So I went ahead and did a semi scientific study to see what kind of mileage I would get at different speeds.

Drive settings:
-Tampa to Melbourne
-150 miles
-88 degrees Fahrenheit

Car variables:
-92 octane gas
-35-38 psi in tires (heat varied)
-Roto-Fab cai
-Nitrogen filled tires

Procedure:
The following speeds were sustained for a minimum of five minutes to measure miles per gallon: 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 82
I began at 82 miles per hour (mistakenly) and worked down to 50 mph.

The results were as followed:
50 mph = 35 mpg

60 mph = 32 mpg

65 mph = 30 mpg

70 mph = 27.5 mpg

75 mph = 25 mpg

82 mph = 22.5 mpg

The results are shown below, it is very nearly linear, which is why I skipped 55 mph. I wanted to see how well my data would account for a missing data point and was pretty satisfied by the results.

The variations in the graph may be due to extraneous variables that may have affected the driving at the time, I do recall the 60 mph setting having rough roads where the pavement was uneven and peeling.

Though I have not replicated this without the cold air intake to make a comparison, I do recall seeing 23.4 mpg at 75 mph and 29.5 mpg at 60 mph. So the difference is between 1.5 and 2.5 mpg. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what to expect on the highway, but again this is a study with an n of one so it can't be considered truly reliable.

PS. The nitrogen filled tires did nothing, just from comparing it to my mpg before I got the nitro. It did however significantly smooth the ride. I ran over a pothole that in the past jarred me a little, this time around was barely noticeable. I was honestly having trouble believing it was the same pot hole.

Very Cool experiment. Today, I did 250 miles at an avg. of 70mph.. got a 27.5. Exactly what you got.

Great idea. I will have to plot the MPG points I have gathered. Compare notes.

I have been using 89 octane for the past two tanks and interestingly, there was no difference in mpg at worst and at best, maybe a .5 drop at 75 mph+. Curious what 87 octane will do but my mind just screams don't put anything other than premium in it....

Excellent experiment.

Those numbers make sense. My avg MPG goes down if I go 75 mph or so constantly on the highway (20 mpg)

I tried going 64 and I was avg 24. It was kinda nice. Got to enjoy the drive more.

Yeah? Ok I'll fill her up with some 87 next time. I just grew up being told premium is better for the engine overall but I feel like maybe today that's not as important.

I feel like that's low, going from premium to mid grade I experience maybe a 0.5 drop at anything above 75 MPH. Are your tires properly inflated? I don't think 5 mpg would fall under a normal deviation but I suppose you could be one of the few cars at 2 or 3 standard deviations below the norm?
I know they check for that but Idk

Been using regular and no difference in mileage, got 40 mpg actually at 50 mph. Not sure how to explain that.

Do you have the windshield bottle relocation kit installed and the ADM Scoop? I noticed a differance right away after complimenting the Roto-Fab CAI with this mod. My MPG went from the same as yours (30MPG) at 110KM/h (65MPH) to 65 mph = 32 mpg. So I gained an additional 2mpg from adding the adm scoop and relocating the windshield bottle. Thats about a savings of $4-$5 at the pump each time you fill up here in Edmonton where gas is at $1.13/litre atm.

No I haven't done that mod, I forgot about that mod actually. I've been trying to figure out why the mileage was so high down the road I went and I realized it has a very slight downward slope in the direction I went. That's my best guess. Other than mpg did you notice any difference in power?

Mine being a ls3 and not a v6 take this as you will. The highest I ever seen my instant mileage stock was 27.7 and after the rotofab I seen 29.1 both at 70mph.

I recently did a 351mi drive in my totally stock car - averaged 58mph, 87 Octane, temps ranged from about 40deg to 58deg, with the trunk packed with heavy tools. A lot of highway cruisng at 75mph+, a couple of "just-for-fun" blasts of likely-high$-ticket speeds , and around 140mi of rural highway driving at 40-60mph. Also, 55mi with the top down. Result: 27.5 MPG. I am considering the Roto-Fab intake, along with two others, so maybe I can repeat the trip someday with the mod.

Yes, the car notices much more pull when your on the highway and freeways. 5th gear and 6th has the most noticeable gains for me with 5th gear having much more balls than before.

The faster you go, the more performance will be noticed with this mod.

In the city, you clearly notice a differance once your close to 60kmph (40mph). I can now easily chirp going into 2nd off the line in manual mode. This was something I always had problems doing and could only do in sport auto mode.

The adm and relocation provides anywhere from 5-20hp depending on what speed your doing.
