If I was getting a ZL1 I would opt for the auto, but the SS I would opt for a manual because of the engine it comes with.

Manual.
I like driving a manual, it makes me feel I am driving the car, not just steering it. I will take my ZL1 to the track, but I am NOT buying it for that. I know the auto is faster in a straight line (0.1 in a 1/4 from a rolling start according to GM), but it was the manual that turned the head-spinning Nurburgring time. It is a matter of preference or a matter of speed, and I am glad GM gave us the option. When I ordered my Boxster in 1996 as a concept vehicle I ordered the auto. But then the dealer got a manual to test drive, and I could not imagine getting an automatic sports car, so I went with manual. Same opinion for me still. I know times change, but on this one I am still old school. |

I'm actually driving one this weekend because I have one ordered and want to make sure I'll be happy with it. So far it's not near as fun as people say...

I am normally an auto guy, but this time (if the zl1 becomes a reality for me) I'll be getting a manual. I would take the auto in the zl1 in a heartbeat, but I will be trying to keep the cost of this car workable for my budget.

There is something about the way a manual trans ties you to the car and the road that just can't be replaced. In my opinion, the ZL1s (yes, mine included) will probably outstrip the driving skill of all but the best drivers. Performance wise, I would say most drivers would be hard pressed to recognize the slight improvement of one over the other.
Its manual all the way for me strictly for the enjoyment factor. |

hard question to answer. auto is $2600 more and gets worse milage. that is the negative. nobody knows how the lap times compare yet. it is faster in a strait line supposedly but I have seen no real world data yet.
this decision is easy for me I like manuals and it is also cheaper and gets better milage so it is win, win, win for me. if you like auto's though and the $2600 does not bother you this is probably the best auto to date GM has built. it kind of boils down to what you like there is no right answer one is not better than the other. the auto is good enough in this car if the money does not bother you it is not a bad choice.
