Cold Air Inductions Initial Impressions

After reading many threads/posts on intakes I decided to purchase the CAI unit along with a scoop and WW relocate from a C5 sponsor. Due to the cold weather here and plus my back was just being a plain bother I just installed the intake and will save the scoop for a warmer weather/better back day install.

I find the quality of the CAI system to be high. Installation was fairly easy and straight forward. This being my first ever intake swap it took me about 20-25 minutes. It does help to have the tools ready and at hand.

One tip that I can pass on to first timers is to mock up the system before finally tightening the hose clamps. Doing this, you can situate the MAF sensor angle to its corresponding connector. There isn't much slack so I would recommend re-installing the connector then finish securing the clamps.

Driving the car, I immediately noticed that the motor spools up much faster and smoother. Looking down at the tach and was surprised that it was already passing 3 grand so soon and seemed to want to easily climb higher. I definitely can tell that the motor is breathing better.

Giving the accelerator a little goose and it seems that the top end is extended giving it the impression that the motor magically grew a liter or two.

I can't comment on any MPG issues because I feel that a tank of gas or three is needed to reach an appropriate average. So, time will tell.

The only issue that I encountered was that I lost indexing on the driver's window when I reconnected the negative battery cable after install. This, of course, cannot be directed towards CAI. The kind members of C5 directed me to the information to remedy the situation and once again all was well in the world.

In conclusion, CAI delivered a high quality product that brought positive performance to my Camaro. Recommended.

You are welcome, sir. Thank you for offering this fantastic product.

I have no qualms about telling like it is - the good, bad, and the ugly.

Cheers!

^^ took me a while to figure out she was holding a sign.

Also, I put in the same model last month. Love it but I am thinking about adding the scoop later this summer.

I did the scoop and CAI at the same time, but you will definitely notice more growl and rasp up front when you are done. You can definitely feel the improvement! After the cam and headers, it's just louder all over when you are on it.

Search around for Jannetty Racing's test of cold air intakes. Surprising improvements with the scoop even on a dyno with no extra air flow at speed. No way to really measure real world improvement at speed, but logic dictates that it has to help.

I'm looking into getting a CAI, likely this one. I've just recently dumped a ton of money into upgrading my stereo system, so the wife has me on a leash. This will likely be the last upgrade to my car if I do get it, at least for a while.

My question to everyone is, how many more MPG can I expect out of adding one of these. Thats going to be my selling point to my wife. If i can let her know I will get an X increase in MPG, and this thing will pay for itself at a certain point, I may be able to swing it. Right now im getting about 22.5-23 mpg combined freeway and city driving. I already have MRT V2 exhaust. And I already drive with a pretty heavy foot half the time, so I dont have to worry too much about the whole "once you add this you wont notice an increase in MPG cuz you cant keep your foot off the gas". I also checked those charts janretty? made, but I didnt see anything about mpg improvements.

Also, what is this "scoop" im reading about. What is it, and how much does it run. Or a link would help too.

First off, thank you for choosing Cold Air Inductions Inc.!

I will try and answer a few of your questions. As for the scoop, that is not something that we here at CAI Inc make, sell, or test, however I can tell you that many of our authorized dealers offer them, and could also tell you a lot more about them. I believe they are typically used in conjuction with a washer bottle relocation kit, and together they free up some airspace inside of the CAI box, and help direct outside air into the box faster. I have heard of many of our customers adding these scoops of various brands and being very happy with the results. If you need a list of our authorized dealers to try and find out more about the scoop or purchase it along with our CAI, you can find a list of them at the folowing link on our website: http://www.coldairinductions.com/dealer-locator

As for MPG, I'll try to keep this as short as possible because it is a lot more complicated than most people realize. Their are a variety of factors that affect fuel eceonomy, including the type of fuel you use, weather, elevation, tire inflation, the speed at which you drive, the gear in which you drive, the speed in with which you accelerate, engine maintenance, excessive idling, cruise control, the grade of motor oil you use, the condition of your air filter, and what other mods you have done to the vehicle. That being said, we can't guruantee that you will see a fuel economy improvement or loss of fuel economy, because there are just way to many factors juggling in the mix, the way you dirve being the biggest. We have had Camaro cuastomers report anywhere from a loss of 2mpg to a gain of 4 mpg. Most commonly I hear about a 2 mpg increase in fuel economy from customers, but that is when driven conservatively, which from the sounds of it you don't do. In short, yes a CAI can possibly get you up to 4 mpg increase in fuel economy (thats what you can tell your wife HAHA) from what you said about how you drive, I would not expect it though!!

Now since the CAI does come with a lifetime use oiled filter you will definitely experience an over time cost savings on that end, play that card with the wifey!

Hopefully that helps!!

Matic,

I feel so sorry for you. You don't even realize that you have the disease. It is not curable, "The Mod Disease" like I said it isn't curable and until you sell the car you will always be looking to do some kind of upgrade to your car. Many lie to themselves and say they are done with the mod's but we all soon find out that they secretly hide from friends and spouses the money spent on aftermarket products. Admitting that you have the disease is half the battle but I doubt you will win it. Good Luck.
