Redline Shockproof gear oil, anyone comment on these to calm down gear whine?
it seems a great number of us have some sort of differential whine but its most obvious when you change the diff bushings to the hard poly and add a new driveshaft, or richmond gears.
We use Redline and Royal Purple all the time and was reading about these shockproof oils for the differential. Just would like some experts to comment whether this would be a good idea or bad for the Camaro differentials versus whats already on the market. One of our guys feels this shockproof stuff is better suited for trucks that tow and stuff. Anyone? |

I use the Red Line shock proof heavy in the transmission of my 2003 Harley Ultra Classic. Very, very thick strawberry colored stuff. I've heard the viscosity is near 250 weight. I don't think the shock proof heavy would be the right choice for a Camaro differential.

I've used heavy shockproof in various race car rear ends...late models, thunder roadsters, and the stuff works great. The stuff is amazing. I cant comment on the amount of noise it reduces, but it is what I will be putting in mine once its time.

Well it looks like I am not the only one interested yet I will be most likely the first to test in the Camaro.
First off the diff in our cars sucks by design, it's weak and doesn't hold enough fluid and the exhaust pipes don't help by radiating heat. i think anything you can do to reduce friction, heat and cushion the blow on the gears for such a heavy car will be a major + I have 150 more miles to drive on the beak in for the 411 JRE diff. Then I will source a pump to get the fluid in the carrier and report back with my findings. Stay tuned. |

guys i had an impossible time getting this oil. two local resellers ordered it and i waited til no end and it never showed up.
Here is something I will add. I tried Lucas Synthetic and Non Synthetic 85-140, then I compared it to 75-90 and 85-140 Royal Purple Max and the 85-140 was the quietest of the batch overall. I am now using the RP in all of our cars in this weight. I am still curious on this Redline oil but its a pain to get around here. |

I have really been following this thread. I hate the differential in this car. I have never had so many issues. I have used both AAM and Richmond gears. In my case, the Richmonds are much quieter. I still have a very low noise, I'm not sure if it is gear whine or vibrations due to the bushing swap. I think it is the bushings because the noise is constant with no change due to rpm. It is very low and the only time you hear it is when my foot is off the gas. But I'm very anal about noises. Is it too much to ask, that if you spend a ton of money on your car that it actually ride better?
Anyway, I appreciate you posting this info. I called redline today and asked for their recommendation. They told me they did not recommend using this oil in low temps below 45 degrees. The oil viscosity is higher than normal and will obviously be a factor at low temps. I only drive it in the summer, so not an issue for me. It also requires the friction modifier. I was told .5-.75 ounces would be enough. I ordered both direct from redline. The total was $21.90. I will let you know if it actually arrives. I won't get home until after the 4th. 55designs, I'm sorry you had so many problems. But, thank you for posting this info. |

Just make sure you use gear oil designed for diffs and not (only) transmissions.

I've never used any of this before, but as it sounds I don't think it will work too well in a ring and pinion. The ring gear slings oil forward to the pinion bearings for lube. If it is too thick it will not oil correctly. I would not use any thing over 140wt in the diffs of any of my vehicles.

I've used it with 4.11 gear set, it lasted 8 miles then I changed it out...it was actually more noisy than other oils I've used. I've used valvoline 85-140 twice somewhat noisy, mobile 1 85-140 somewhat noisy, penzoil 85-140 noisy, redline shockproof 250 noisy, now I am using lucas 85-140 least noisy so far, I am going to try Amsoil next...all fluid changes with Ford friction modifier per jannetty...most of the noise in my opinion that I am getting is resonating with the diff bushing upgrade
