While many of us are not worried, it is worth pointing out that history maintains a trend of punishing people for nothing at all. We punished witches at Salem and communists in Congress, even though McCarthy knew that they were just opponents to his own success.

This is an opportunity for the government to have unnecessary information. This information is saved on high-tech computers that we paid for the government to keep and run by employees who receive pay from tax dollars. I'd rather that money go to a poor school district or to disaster relief than someone who can easily clip a recording to make a good American look bad.

I love my country. I want it to stay free and brave. For it to be free, liberties cannot be steamrolled. For it to be brave, we must all have the capacity to say what we want, do what we want, and live how we want.

We shouldn't have to worry about the words we say being placed in an order that incriminates us to someone who might benefit from our punishment.

It's not paranoia. The recordings are real. We're now waiting for someone to capitalize from someone's "un-American" conversation, even though it is "American" to say what we want in a place that grants to right to speak freely. There is no guarantee that we won't be punished for such statements, especially if they are true.

Contact your elected officials to discuss your freedom of speech. Tell them how you love your country, but you know that our nation's founders are rolling in their graves knowing that government has this sort of power over Americans.

If you are concerned about privacy Onstar should be the least of your worries. With survailance systems available to the FBI , CIA etc they can get all kinds of information on what you are doing and who you are doing it with. You can't make a call on any phone, an email post to website or do just about anything without one of these agencies being able to know if they want. The key issue here is that it is highly unlikely that they would care less about anything that any of us are doing.

According to this administration I'm a bigger threat then a terrorist because I'm a injured vet who owns guns. Let them listen. Hope they like very loud music and really bad singing.

I've come to beleive that I may be one of very few people left in the world that doesn't own a cell phone. I find it interesting that people worry about being spied on while in their car when if they carry a cell phone they can be spied on whenever it is near them.

http://news.cnet.com/2100-1029-6140191.html

From the article:

Kaplan's opinion said that the eavesdropping technique "functioned whether the phone was powered on or off." Some handsets can't be fully powered down without removing the battery

Ask yourself these questions:

1) Am I a terrorist?
2) Am I friends with/related to a terrorist?
3) Do I run my own international crime syndicate?
4) Do I sell drugs?

If your answers are no to all those questions then the FBI doesn't give 2 shits what is goin on in your car and they do NOT have agents sitting there listening to you. They record on average 1 out of every 5 phonecalls you make anyway, and they have a computer that searches these calls for threats. There isn't some guy sitting there listening.

And even if there is who cares!

Thats just absolutely NOT true. The insurance company can only get that information with a court order. And they don't have the time to sit there and monitor you. They use the black box scans in the vent of a MAJOR accident (and only with a court order as well), good luck disconnecting that.

Someone has seen Mel Gibson's "Conspiracy Theory" one tooooo many times.

I always get a chuckle out of tin-foil hat threads like this. Honestly, if you're worrying about OnStar or "Big Brother" listening in to your conversations... than you have a guilty conscience.

Seriously, get a grasp on reality, PLEASE.

Well you go ahead and follow the rest of the sheep and sign up, before you do maybe you should read the fine print..eh! like I said if you plan to pose like the 99% will do you will be fine. If you want to take the car to it's limits at a track..goood luck!

IBTL Politiks.

Don't worry about it folks. Besides you might want it to track your car down it stolen or to unlock if keys inside.

Oh well they can track me if they like watching someone drive about 3000 miles a year (work out of home office).

I feel sorry for commuters. $$$

They are taxing everything that moves now.

What do I know I am just a teabaging redneck anyway (Garafalo).

Just did some research on this. Looked to see if there were any Ninth Circuit cases about the FBI using OnStar to spy on people. There weren't.

I then looked to see if there were ANY federal cases about the police using OnStar to spy on people. There weren't. Here is what I did find.

There was one case about Illinois police getting a warrant from a judge to track a drug dealer's truck using OnStar after the dealer had participated in a controlled buy. And one other case in Texas where some guy pressed his OnStar button by accident which led to OnStar calling the cops to make sure everything was OK. Guy was disruptive, cops searched the car and found a gun.

Ignore me if you want, and I'm sure many of you will, but there was no court case about the FBI using OnStar to track anyone. Even if they did, FBI or state police would need a warrant.

Here's the concern, your at the track you crash your car and decide you want to pay the damage out of pocket instead of going through insurance. (not that they would cover you). Insurance co and everyone else involved with onstar will know. goodluck trying to get coverage after regardless if you put a claim in or not..

forget the terroist theory that dosen't conern us here, you guys have really been brainwashed with that garbage..

I took a test drive in a an unsold SS at the dealer a couple weeks ago.....and I don't think the new owner of it is going to like the results when he gets his first report from OnStar....

I think you're on to something. What about those quotes of Bob Barr in that article? I bet they were taken completely out of context.
