Shop around. You will find LARGE differences in the rates. The accident will count if a claim was filed with the current company, regardless of fault. Most states are "no fault" It is just how they look at it. I have been hit 3 times in the last five years, luckily nothing serious but in every case I filed a claim with drivers insurance company who hit me. None of accidents show up under me.
You also may want to check into other policies, life, renters, homeowners if you plan on buying one. Bundling them can help reduce your rates substantially.

Insurance is a funny thing. I recently added a third motorcycle to my policy and my premium went down! And the motorcycle was a off road bike! Go Figure.

There are many factors. Age and experience are some of them. It varies by state and just because the same driver pays x in one state does not mean it will be that in another state. The best advice given so far was to get several quotes. Also, be sure you are giving them the correct usage of the vehicle (and annual miles). Be sure to check your liability levels and your deductibles. High liability limits and low deductibles is more expensive. You have to decide on what you need. If you can't pay a 1k deductible then don't set it there, but then you have to pay the higher rates for lower deductibles. Car insurance is about transfer of risk. You pay the insurance company to take on more risk.

When I was around 18-20 I was paying $325 a month liability only on an my old 71 Chevelle... I had one accident at fault, 1 street racing on the highway, and 1 careless driving. Now @ 27, I currently have a clean record and I pay about $63 a month for full coverage on the Camaro, and liability on my 93 F250.
$860 seems pretty odd for a guy with only one accident. Shop around. I always get new quotes from a few companies each time my policy is about to come up for renewal, although to date I have never found a better deal than the company I'm with now, and have been with them for about 4-5 years now. |

When I was 21 I owned a new 1989 Mustang LX 5.0. I was paying $170 per month to insure it. I'd had several drag racing and "exhibition of acceleration" violations on record.
I never said I was very smart at age 21.

Some insurance companies literally do not want your business if you might be high risk for an accident. So, they will just quote you through the roof to turn you away. I once had a Honda CBR and called one company for a quote an it was 4X the other companies!! Remember, the ones that advertise low premiums have those prices because of lesser claims.

Commits weekly crime
|
I've posted about it before, but...my rates pretty high at 340/month.
I do have 100 deductible, and very high amounts for coverage. I'm 48, have 3 tickets for speeding, and one for the accident I was in.

$340/month Steve...that's nutty!!! Is that the price of your policy with multiple vehicles on it?
I'm 29 with one accident (rolled my Chevy Colorado on its side while 4-wheeling...that was cheap...not), no tickets....high limits liability and uninsured motorist, PIP, comp/collision w/ $500 deductible and it's something like $400 every 6 months to insure, so $800/year. We've got two other vehicles on the policy, but even back when I was living alone and only had one car (a 2000 Z28), I never paid more than $1000/year with similar coverages. I've got an umbrella policy on top of my regular insurance now because lord knows if all 426 horses unexpectedly escape, the farm is gonna have a problem...and that's only $200/year. Do you want the number for my State Farm agent to see if he can do you up for a reasonable quote? lol |

Quote:
The 100 deductible and close to max coverage across the board is what runs it up so much. I don't have a car payment, so it's not a huge deal. Sure, I'd like to spend less, but I also want to keep the high coverage I have. I also do a fair amount of city driving, and have put on about 20k miles a year. Thus, higher rate.

when your comparing peoples numbers in here you must talk about the same age, the same car in the same area. People talking about their numbers on different vehicles isnt really comparing apples to apples.
I would guess you could be as high 3-400 a month. I bought my SS when I was 26 and paid 70-80 a month but I also had a clean record, married and mulitple vehicle policy. Im 29 now and pay 68 a month for the camaro. |
