[GREEN] Saving gas?
Is it true that using the tap-shifters saves you gas?

I would say no since in sport mode the computer knows to shift a little more aggressive. So with tap shift I believe the computer has to approve the shift after you decide to change. I could be wrong and I wouldn't know for sure since I have a manual.

I do this mainly in my Pontiac G6 when trying to conserve a little gas. You can shift sooner than the computer will thus keeping your revs down and saving a little gas.
Although if you still want that getty-up you will have to be conscious of your gears like in an actual manual car lol.

Not in my case. The RPMs run higher when I am in 'even funner' mode.

No, ultimate gas saving is in "D" with cruise control on, unless you are in a super hilly place, then you will just want to hold the gas pedal at the same position.
Both of these methods are to keep the AFM kicked in for 4cyl mode. I have a hilly area that I go thru and going uphill, cruise control accelerates and kicks me out of AFM so in the hilly area I use the gas pedal to keep the throttle in the same position, but you will lose speed going up hill. But in a certain case where you cruise at an exact speed, and the "D" shift points land you in a high RPM, then tap shifters may help you out. For 90% of people, they wont. |

In theory, if you are looking to get the "best" gas mileage, hold your gas pedal at the same spot to achieve the speed limit on a flat section of highway. Leave the gas pedal depressed at this location whether you are going up or down hills. The problem isn't the fact that you will go slower up hills it is speed you may get up to when coming down them.... LOL! BUT you will get good gas mileage!... |
