There actually several deserts down here. The Sonoran is the one Phoenix is in and has almost all the big Saguaro Cacti. The Mojave is mostly California and has a lot less plant life due to less rain that the Sonoran. The Chihuahuan desert covers much of New Mexico and West Texas with a far higher average height than the Sonoran/Mojave. The Chihuanhuan is mostly known for Yucca, it even has blizzards. The Great Basin Desert is the largest of all the South West Deserts covering much of Utah and Nevada. The Great Basin is generally thought as a "cold desert" with much lower temperatures due to the elevation and more northern latitude.
