They will not I have been down that road. If you want piece of mine replace the driveshaft with a DSS one piece driveshaft and your problems are over.

Yea I get that they may not hold. The plan for me is to replace all 3 bolts and nuts on the front yoke this time. I don't have that much in front of it (~520RWHP) so there is a chance they will hold if installed correctly (and not "checked" later by a GM service tech (OVER)doing some recall check). Can't prove anything but there are witness marks on the remaining bolt heads. I know there are alternatives from the aftermarket but this is cheap and easy experiment so it gets tried first. No word on upgraded hardware for the drive shaft yet ? Broke one and bent two last night. Looking to pick up a full set front and back.
If there are no upgrades available can anyone recommend a good dealer ship in the States to order from online with quick shipping. Thanks Never mind decided to order a one piece aluminum dss. Last edited by Inferno Orange SS; 06-03-2012 at 07:46 PM. |

Update - Broke another bolt today. This time it was one at the rear end of the drive shaft. One of the front bolts (with the nut on it) is also spining around loose but not unthreading itself yet. Keep your eye on these bolts!
Dealer is overnighting in some replacement bolts.-Mark. |

Are any of you re-using them at any time (obviously not once they've broken)? That's a no no with these bolts. They're specifically noted as remove and discard in the service manual.

I think I may have further identified issues with these fasteners this weekend while re-installing my driveshaft with new fasteners. I noted that the torque specs in the service manual are for the nuts, not for the heads of the bolts...this usually will be different...and good luck EITHER getting the fasteners in from the opposite direction for access to the nuts with a torque wrench OR getting a torque wrench in on the nuts...now I'm nervous about mine.

Strange place for the bolts to fail. So the shear point is on a thread, not the shank? I haven't taken mine out to check depth, but the sheer point where the two flanges meet up should NEVER ride on the threads. Especially cut threads. Yuck...

If they are bolt/nut arrangement you will not be able to see where they have failed. The bolt and nut will be long gone. If the "threadded into a flange" bolts fail you might see the broken stubs still threaded into the flange as they do not use a nut there. FWIW. -Mark. |
