G6X3 Cam Questions

recently had the G6X3 cam kit installed on my car. supporting mods include kooks headers, kooks 3" catback, slp underdrive pulley and vmax throttle body. so far i have been to two different tuners and my car is not fun to drive. driving side streets i really dont notice the issue as much as driving on the highway were it is smooth. just driving along in any gear (3rd, 4th, 5th) i feel the car surging or bucking(maybe its called kicking back?). not sure the best way to describe it. this is with the car above 2000 rpms. next issue/question is for those that have the cam. is 6th gear usable for you? i can be cruising on the highway doing 70 mph in 6th gear with the rpm's aroung 1500-1600 i want to say and the car has very noticable bucking. i assume these issues i'm having are all tuning issues but so far i'm down two seperate tuning fees and hate driving my car. the current tuner has been in business for 9 years and i like the guy. he has good customer service and is going to research the cam more.

Happens a lot with so called "tuners" so don't feel like you are in that boat alone.

It's a pretty good size cam you have buck the bucking and surging should be able to be gotten rid of. Sounds like you haven't found the right shop yet.

Issue you are going to have now is you already took it to a second shop. You should have taken it back to the original shop.

Have you taken the 2nd "tuner" with you on a ride and had him log it, and show him what the problem is?

I have that cam, and although i am a noob car guy... It sounds like those are just a few of the cons to having a cam. Mine bucks a little at low rpms but i just work it out with the throttle and clutch

i understand it bucking at low rpms mostly drving around town, nature of a bigger cam. however are you able to drive down the expressway doing 70mph in 6th gear. im not able to do it.

I have the G6X3 cam and love it. It did take some getting use to at first though. At low RPM's there is some bucking and surging, but you will have that with any large cam and stock gears out back. Just like yourself, at 70 mph 6th gear is useless. The honey spot for 6th seems to be right around 75+ mph. I plan on changing my rearend gears in the near future, this will solve most of the surging and bucking issues I have.

Thats a pretty big cam but most surging is usually tune related. Sounds like they need to add some timing around that RPM/Load region.

Did your tuner (tuners) drive the car around and log the PCM with AutoTap or something similar? That might show them what is going on. Your problem might be tune related, but it might not be. It could be a problem with the throttle body and/or with the mass airflow meter. I would recommend a shop, but I don't know where you've been already.

Bucking and surging in the highway (I'll assume you are doing 1500-2000 rpms) is something to fix for sure. Good luck.

Love this cam. This cam not only needs to be dyno tuned..... but street tuned also. Take the tuner with his laptop for a ride showing him your concern. If they have any experience at all, they should be able to tune out most of your issues. Also agree with the possible MAF issue, make sure yours is a strong one. I only have bucking under load under 1500rpm. Drives like a dream any other time. Good luck
