Interesting Saturday DIY - Pic Heavy

About a year ago, my son and I started to fix up a 1985 Nissan 300ZX that was his mom's first new car. We pulled the engine and fixed it up. Pulled the transmission and rebuilt it (with some help), did all of the body work ourselves and painted it. It has been a blast teaching him how you don't have to be a mechanic to work on a car yourself. We have been learning as we go.

Well the A/C started getting funky with the defrost coming on on it's own lately. Bad vacuum lines were the culprit and the ones that ran through the firewall to behind the dash were splitting. These are the only ones we had not replaced when we pulled the motor.

The dash did have some cracks, so we decided to get a gently used one and try the task of replacing it ourselves since we had to pull it to get the vacuum lines in. Yesterday we spend about 5 hours pulling out the old dash, running all new vacuum lines, moving the gauge clusters to the new dash, replacing duct work, and putting in a new dashboard. That was quite the experience, but we got it done. I am one proud father that he did this and all of the work on the car. He now is driving this car and treating it like a baby. I figured all the gear heads here would get a kick out of seeing this.

Thanks guys. It was really not that bad. The worst part was hooking the speedometer cable back up. There was not enough room to really get your hand in there, so we had to jack the car up and disconnect the cable out of the transmission. Other than that, it was just writing down every step so we could reassemble it. Talk about major pucker factor when testing it out.

Next week we pull out the headliner, seat and carpet and recover all of them. I have a upholstery place that has agreed to apprentice us through the leather stitching process. This should be fun.

Awesome DIY! I try to do as much as I can at home on my car and my parents' vehicles, but there really are some things out of my ability. I tip my hat off to you.

How to hug your camaro
Buy the car that you would most like to get beat in. The other guy will always be faster.
