Making back seat cup holders

I don't usually have back seat occupants but when I do, I prefer they have cup holders.

What is under the plastic bulge GM offers us as back seat arm rests? I was thinking I could dremmel a cup sized-hole and insert a generic cup holder (red asterisk in pic).

These, "jumbos" are $3 (3.5" diameter)

Advice? Thanks!

It's just padding as far as I know. The bottom seat cushion just pops up from the front. There are little clips around the middle of each seat. Pull up on those locations, and the bottom cushion pulls right up. Just push down in the same spot to re-engage the clips. This is how I routed my wires from my sub install to my center console.

You could lift the seat if you felt it would help you design something that could work. Sounds like a lot of work just to ruin the leather to me though...

yea - that's what I meant, right by the red star. Sorry if I was unclear. I hope to put it in the plastic arm rest. Is that pannel easily removed in your experience?

IIRC that panel requires removing the rear seat belts to come off. I was trying to run some wires to the trunk and ended up leaving it on. The seat removal is easy tho. If you do get it done please post a how to. Rear cup holders would be awesome.

Credit to DSV customs (whose website is a nightmare by the way) I got this pic of the stripped int from their thread on the SEMA project

The problem is that they removed EVERYTHING that is there. I hope I dont go to insert a decent depth cup holder and don't have clearance bc of some wiring or something.

Oh okay sorry for the misinterpretation. :( Guess I didn't read it very diligently.

Interesting...I have taken the panels off when I installed my rear speakers, so I know that is nothing behind them. I would work, its just a matter of mounting and setting them in. I think any epoxy would hold them in.

Saw this in a thread on a company selling $50 tranny hump placed dual cup holders

Good idea but not for $50. I'd pay $15 max for that (I would be upset too lol). More cheap looking plastic? Pass!

Here is my preliminary investigation. I don't think this idea will work. Tranny hump mount seems more reasonable.

Far end

Widest part

Length of arm rest

Could it fit in the window bay? Yup. But that's silly.

What's behind that cheap plastic - nothing!

The back seats have no leg room or head room, so it's difficult to find people who will even fit back there, let alone be comfortable. I wouldn't want to promote drinking or eating in my car anyway. That's just waiting for something shitty to happen. Have fun with that though.
