Great site
I registered with the site a while ago when I got my SS. I've learned so many great things here already and I come back often, if just to look around. I love the commeraderie (sp?) of the owners and their passion is addictive!
I'm a mod junky (definition: gotta have it but can't support the habit) but unfortunately have no technical skills. So I drool over a lot of performance mods but can't quite bring myself to carry through. Baby steps. Later this Summer I am hoping to install a cai system to gain a few ponys and some mpg. If that goes well I may swap some lowering spings and a cat back. Thanks for all the support Camaro5!

Cai is super easy to install. Just need a couple basic tools like screwdriver and sockets and either a heat gun or hair dryer depending on the type you get.
Catback.can be a bit of a pain so get a buddy to help. Stock exhaust is heavy and all in one solid piece all the way back from the cats. Have fun modding. |

Hugger69, CONGRATS on the new ride, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.
oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here. Welcome!!

What's an oil catch can do?

Modern engines feature a variety of emission control devices and systems to reduce the toxic gases released into the atmosphere. One of these is called the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. During the combustion process a small amount of gases leak or “blow-by” the piston rings and create a positive pressure in the crankcase. The PCV system vents these gases along with oil mist from the crankcase and routes it back into the intake manifold so it can be burned off. The problem is, over time the excess oil vapor collects along the inside of the intake tract and forms a “gunk”. This can lead to a variety of issues including carbon build up, retarded timing, detonation, and power loss.
An oil-air separator is an aftermarket device that will condense and collect the oil vapor before it has a chance to reach the intake system. As the gases and oil vapor enter the can they typically pass through a screening mechanism that gives the oil vapor something to adhere to. As the droplets form they drop harmlessly into the bottom of the reservoir so that they can later be drained. The other gases are allowed to pass through so that they can be burned of as intended. These devices are often referred to as “catch cans”, though that term is truly more accurate when describing a fluid overflow tank designed to just capture leaking or overflowing fluids. When it comes to selecting a catch can you will get what you pay for. Cheap catch cans (less than $100) are plentiful but they are often little more than an empty can with two ports. These will capture a small amount of oil but the vast majority passes straight through. I recommend the RX Performance catch cans. They are probably the best designed units available. |
