I was taught if you can't hit the target by pointing your weapon you should not be using lethal force. Some call it the 10' rule. Should you make a mistake and fire at a target 11' away, drag them around a bit until they are found dead in the 10' range. If you accidentally hit the target in the back roll him over and try again. Oh and don't stop firing until you run out of bullets.

Do I pass the test?

I know LEOs that used to carry revolvers with an empty chamber for safety. Works great until you really need it and you are one bullet short.

Anyone who carries around a gun w/out a bullet in the chamber is cutting their chances of survival tremendously. By the time you react to the threat, the threat might have already gotten off a round or two (which is why you move as you draw). Probability is the bad guy isn't as good as a shot as the good guy who trains (let alone on a moving target). But, if you short yourself (your buddies...) that single shot and have to rack the slide chambering a round, as you know, that could be baaaaaad.

I don't have all my guns in my safe. The safe is mainly to keep them and my valuables protected while I'm not at home. I do have one very close which I can get to in a matter of a second. However, when I'm not at home, the wife needs to be able to get to some form of protection for her and the kids quickly. She knows that if she's the master (where we usually are) and someone breaks in, she can get herself and the kids into the closet quickly enough and there's the safe. It literally takes 1.5 seconds to get into the safe and there's my .40 in the door. Should that not suffice, the shotgun is loaded with 5 slugs. Should that not work, she has other "options...."... But rifle rounds go pretty far and through many things, so I'd rather her stick to the .40

The reason for the safe is piece of mind when I'm not at home as well as safety for the kids. I am totally open with the kids about my guns. I'm happy to show them the guns and let them hold them. I teach them safety and the 4 cardinal rules of gun safety. They know....but hey...I knew too..... when I was a stupid 4th grader and I accidentally shot a friend of mine with a pellet gun in the left side. Luckily, it was only a pellet gun and not something worse. I learned a lot that summer. And felt pretty bad.

I'm definitely not saying internals are bad, but it's more about appearance than anything.

Trust me, I researched the heck out of this when I picked mine.
I trust you.

The safes I was looking at only had the main locks going outward on the left side...not on the top and bottom and right side as well. I wish I could have gotten one like that, but that would have meant a much larger step up in price. What I got will more than suffice. But that's what I meant when I said hinges can be cut. On the safe you are talking about, sure...outside vs inside don't mean a thing. They only facilitate opening of the door. But, if the locks only come out on one side of the door and into the frame, then hinges on the outside are bad.

98%

The other 2% are:

20ft rule.

Remember that even at 20ft away, I can get you with a knife before you can get me with your holstered weapon. And....that is IF you know I'm coming at you full speed with a knife in my hand. So, you can shoot a bit further.

And that last 1% is ...

don't run out of bullets. Once bad guy #1 is down and you unload your weapon, how you gonna get bad guy #2 who's packing and waiting for you to come around the corner? Always be prepared for a second attack by someone else.... scan down scan... (left, right....left, right... 180 behind you on both sides).

Just keep throwing stars strategically placed as art in the hallway. They'll never see it coming.

Same thing for me. If I'm traveling my wife keeps the 12 gauge close at hand. My boys are 15, and I've also taught them how to handle and use a firearm.

Ahh...that makes sense. I haven't seen those types of locks.

Clip #1 in the gun. Clips #2 and #3 standing by, If I need more the 12 gauge pump will do. Then again, it could be that the 12 gauge comes out first. It all depends on how I am feeling.

My daughter thinks I'm a 'Psycho'. (her words)

If it's dark, I WILL be answering a knock at the door with my pistol in my hand. Every time. I am usually at the desk watching TV and on C5 when I'm not in the garage. I always have my pistol on the desk beside me or on the bench in the garage.

I will accept no criticism. If people don't like it. Don't come to my house after dark.

I'm not stupid enough to think that the bad guys only come out after dark, but the kids in the entire school district know I'm carrying. Oh, and I've never been toilet papered. They teach our Troopers here in Bama that if you pull that trigger it's to kill only. I subscribe to that. Always have.

I hope I never have to use it. I've had one trained on a friend of my son one night. Safety off, locked and loaded. He was at James window at 2:30 am on a school night. I'm not ashamed to say that while he was scared to death, and every kid in the Jr. high and high schools knew about it later, I was MUCH more afraid that he was.

Doug, and my buddy Steve and the rest of the LEOs are freaking crazy. lol

Thank God they are.

yeah, every LEO i've talked to says if you shoot somebody (protecting yourself, family, property, etc) that it's a lot easier on everybody if you don't leave a contesting story walking around

I probably can't outrun you either!

New practice regime... Draw and shoot behind back while running away from target

Most burglaries are DURING the day time while people are at work. When the bad guys break in, they kick in the door and RUN in catching everyone off guard. They know why they are there....you don't know why they are there...and even if they are in your house, it takes most folks a couple seconds to realize, "oh shit." Sitting with your guy by you is going to save your life. You got that right. I don't call it crazy, I call it self preservation and keeping your family safe.

Hell yeah, brother.

Ask any officer about the 20ft rule. they'll tell ya. We practiced it in the academy to prove to others how running 20ft is faster than drawing a holstered weapon.

(and boy do I have a video to show of me exiting my patrol car and taking down a guy...lmao. GREAT video!)
