Yes, you can remove the stock manifolds and cats, there are several brands of aftermarket headers that will mount up to the stock connection pipes.

do you get the same performance gains as if you changed the mufflers or just went to straight pipes? does the stock mufflers sound that bad?

I run headers hi flow cats in to oem cat back and it's perfect no droan and barks nicley, still quiet at idle except i run a rough idle bump stick and gives a bit more aggressive idle tone with some rock n roll

Impo cat back afternarkets ill provide add db's to idle and over all tone/ sound but minimum performance gains and potential droan at cruiz rpm 1500 - 2000 rpm

The perfomane gain including added sound is all in the headers hi flow cat combination and tune

But tune comes wirh a price of voiding powertrain warranty, not the headers / cats

A tune is not 100% mandatory with headers/cats but you could run in to throwing codes which is a pia

There might be very minimal gains with aftermarket cat backs, surely a weight savings and sound maybe a few hp on the dyno but no seat of the pants feel

If you swap the headers you would at least want to also go with high flow cats. It would be counter productive to have headers pushing into restrictive factory cats. The rest of the factory exhaust system flows pretty well though.

A real nice set up is the ARH long system if you plan on keeping your stock mufflers. This will replace everything all the way back to the muffler and will offer great power gains and sound. With the stock mufflers still in place it'll stay pretty mild compared to other set ups with headers. If you ever decide you need it loud a cut out works great with that set up.

I did ARH LT last week and LOVE IT! Already had cat-back,LT made an impressive gain in performance and sound. Have not tuned yet, but no CEL so far. Definitely recommend these LT and hi-flow cats.

Or you could do LT's HF Cats, stock H Pipe and a muffler delete if you want to scare children like I do right now with my car.

LOL I'm probably doing an axleback or a resonated H pipe to tame the sound a little.

I installed Kooks LT's with hiflow cats and kept stock mid pipe and axelback. much louder than stock above 3k rpms and especially above 4k.. I didn't do a dyno run but prob gained around 30hp with tune, the extra power is noticable escpecially when you add a CAI and have it tuned. It's an incredible mod and worth the time and $$
