I always wondered if it would cause vision issues at night if it were in the dash, I know it bugs me when my wife turns on the map light to read something....

Actually, the real reason is that they couldn't make it work and someone thought that the "glare" would be a good "cover up" excuse.

Hopefully they get it sorted out in the next few months and start shipping complete cars with the properly finished interiors.

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I was talking to a GM Trainer for the Camaro and he said that the ambient lighting is in place in the dash, but not hooked up. Sounds like the plug is just taped up and you'd just have to apply +12v and ground to it and you'd be good to go. I haven't pulled the panels to check this out, but might be worth lookin' into.
