plate check?

How many times have you had the sheriff, local or state police follow you or pull behind you and see them on the computer as they appear to be running your plates? Lately it has been about once a month for me. Not doing anything wrong mind you.

There is a reason people have to display license plates...so the police can run a check if they deem it necessary. I run as many plates as I can, it’s a good way to find bad guys.

Yeah but legally doesn't law enforcement have to have a legit reason to pull you over? I mean in my opinion if you are doing nothing wrong, minding your own business, wearing your seatbelt, not speeding and nothing wrong with your car (tail light out, no blinker etc.) that is invasion of privacy and disturbance of the peace on the cop's part.

He's not refering to getting pulled over. Just cops getting behind you and running your plates. I say have at it, as long as there not pulling me over.

True, but they can almost always find something to pull you for. For instance, in the state of Md, it is illegal to have ANY part of your tag blocked from sight. In other words, when you drive your brand new car off the lot, your breaking the law because of that ugly "bozo's Chevrolet" tag frame the dealer put on there. How many cars do you see with tag frames? I'd guess at least 30%. Granted, most cops won't pull you for it but, if your a habitual drunk driver, it's a valid legal reason for them to pull you and check things out.

Read a report, nowadays they have these hood/roof mounted scanners. Don't even have to run your plates anymore. That sucker just automatically scans the plate and alerts the LEO if you've got outstanding issues. It's done to parked cars too. Also videos, and keeps the GPS coordinates of where your car was. Plus it's stored in a database "somewhere". Talk about invasion?...I asked my brother about it (he's a LEO), and he said "yep! I can log in, pull up where you've been and even see a video of your car." He jokes his wife about knowing where she's been and when. Talk about !!!

They can not legally stop you randomly, but they don't need probable cause, either.

Probable cause is required to write you a ticket, not to stop you. The burden for a traffic stop is reasonable suspicion. That is defined as anything leading an officer to reasonably suspect a violation of the law. It is a much lower burden than probable cause.

Sounds to me like someone is just a bit paranoid about a cop being behind them. How do you know he's "running your plate"? He could just be talking on his radio. As long as you weren't speeding and obeying the other traffic laws, relax. Chill out.

Just because they are using their MDT does not meen they are running your plate. They also get jobs, e-mail and crime reports over them.

The highlighted part of your quote above is not necessarily true. If police are running a check point, they can stop you randomly. They can stop every car and check paperwork or they can stop every other or every third car, which ever they choose. This is done all the time with DWI Check Points.

IN NJ THE STATE POLICE do this all the time for road side vehicle inspections. They check your paper work and inspection sticker and if anything is off, you get pulled to the side. Some times they might only be stopping Commercial Vehicles and other times they are stopping Passenger Vehicles.

I've worked with Mobile Data and Public Safety for over 15 years. The capability for a LEO to run a plate (and yes there is video/camera tech that assists) quickly and easily is necessary to be efficient and for officer safety.

I wouldn't be concerned if there is a car behind you, as long as you have nothing to hide it should be a non-issue.

Of course, most of us might have a mod or two that could be an potential issue, but that is minor in the grand scheme of things.

Most of the cops in my area are cool, when I first got the car of course they followed me around like crazy. After I went to the police sponsored VIN etching event I met them and ended up staying there 3 hours because they all wanted to check out my car.

I am the only Orange Camaro in town with white stripes so now when I pass the LEO's they wave. It doesn't hurt that the satellite office is .5 mile from my house and they use my street as the shortcut. It isn't out of the ordinary for my wife to come home from work and there is a LEO in my driveway talking to me about cars.
