Strange new creaking/rattling noise coming from the gear shifter

Anyone else having this problem? It just started randomly out of nowhere.

In my 2012 2SS/RS L99, the gear shifter has started making a new rattling/creaking noise. It only happens when the shifter is in Drive. And it especially happens whenever I brake, accelerate, or make a fast turn. Living in Southern Calfornia with stop and go traffic, I pretty much hear creaking noise every 20 seconds!

If I touch the gear shifter while its in drive, I can produce the same creaking/rattling noise when I try to move the shifter slightly up and down.

Not a huge issue, more than of annoyance if anything. Tried searching the forums and couldn't find anything.

Have you tried taking the route of getting a proper diagnosis at a dealership? Please let us know if this is an available option to you!

I posted this thread a couple of weeks ago.http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240077 My appointment at the dealer got delayed until this next Monday. My shifter noise sounds similar to yours. I think the dealership will just replace the shifter. Just as well that my appointment got pushed to this next Monday, because my rear axle is starting to make a rubbing grinding noise when backing out of my driveway and turning the wheel. (after the car has been sitting overnight) There is alot of others on this site with this issue. No big deal. Should get them both fixed this next Monday at the dealer. So I suggest taking it to your dealer and have a tech sit in your car, and show him the noise. Then get r fixed.

It just maybe the plastics rubbing on each other. Pop off the plastic sourround for the shifter and apply dialyctic grease on the contact edges. Wife had a BMW that made this noise only in the summer time...it gets hot her in Vegas! According to the service advisor, the plastic panels expand and cause annoying creaking noise..the tech reached in, popped the console off and applied grease, popped it back on and the noise was gone. The whole thing took 3 minutes.

Just got my car back. They did replace the whole shifter unit. I tell you the truth, the little trigger on the shifter handle never did feel right to me from day one of owning the car. It kind of had a stuck or jammed feeling, did not want to push in smoothly all the time. Now it feels good, easy/smooth to push the trigger. Also at the very bottom of the unit is a bushing/fitting that connects to the shifter rod from the tranny. You can see it from underneath the car above the exhaust in that area. That bushing/fitting was loose, had too much play in it. So anyways, the shifter feels great, noise it gone. I am happy with the results.
