Late night wonders...

So last night I got out of work really late and I was pretty tired. To occupy myself from falling asleep I started looking around for things to make me think and I began wondering how long does the light that lights up the speedo cluster and radio lasts and what happens if it goes out?

I'm pretty new to cars so I'm not sure. Anyone know how long the lights in these cars are made to last or if they even go out?

I believe they are all LED now

They should last the lifetime of the vehicle.

They do go out. When it's in the gauge cluster, you just have to take the cluster out and change the bulb. They're tiny little things, inexpensive too.

Delco (GM) radios are notorious for this. If you've ever owned a GM car/truck with one of these kinds of radios (below) they burn out faster than normal. Super-annoying. These are harder to replace...sometimes you can find a junked unit and swap out the pieces. Otherwise, you have to take it apart and solder on new bulbs.

HVAC and switch bulbs vary depending on how the unit is assembled.

It's a totally valid question; easy answer; and often an easy fix. It's also very cheap if you are able to do it yourself. Pulling things like the radio and the instrument cluster in 4th gen cars only took a few minutes time. Might be a little tougher in the 5th gen cars, especially with the integrated HVAC.

Not your point, I realize... but do you know what the long haul truckers say is the best method to stay awake on those late, long drives?

Take a $100 bill...

Hold it tightly between your thumb and index finger...

Hold it as far out the window as you can reach...

... and drive on.

Funny... but also a good way to lose $100 even if you manage to stay awake.

The best thing for sleepiness is to park the heavy equipment and get some sleep Time is money, but both mean nothing if you're dead...

I just want to know how you are new to cars. They don't have them where you are from?
