Escort now networks through a smart cord and a phone app... the game has really changed. My detection is not used to speed excessively but to help me avoid the idiots brake checking in front of me when they spot the cop in the median. It also picks up road construction sites. Mainly the detector helps to make me more aware especially in city areas with speed and red light cameras.

I don't know how people can prove that the radar detector saved them from getting a ticket. Did the Cop pull them over and say "You're lucky you slowed down or I was going to give you a ticket, good thing you had that detector." Sometimes the Cop is just sitting there on the side of the road reading a book, lol, or just to lazy to get out of the car at the moment. If a Cop sees the radar detector in most states that in it's self is illegal and you get a ticket plus a ticket for speeding. I can't tell you how many people I know that say to me I got a ticket for having a radar detector on the dash of my car, "I didn't know they were illegal." Duh! You are using a device to try and break a law for crying out loud. Common sense is impossible to teach. Either you have it or you don't.

I never thought of that. Slowing down could possibly save a ton of money if you get the warning soon enough to slow down. If you are going to speed then maybe that in it's self would pay for itself, cheaper tickets.

They help, but aren't foolproof. If you are the only car on the road, or just ignore the frequent noises they make you can still get hit.
I'm sure there are some top of the line units that have front and rear sensors, hidden and all, that cost over $1000, seems excessive and can't move them from vehicle to vehicle. $400 will get you a damn good one, and save you from that speedtrap on your morning commute. There's always safety in numbers and that radar detector gives you an extra advantage over the other cars on the road with ya. We need the advantage, two cars speeding down the road, one is an Impala, the other is a flashy Camaro....who will the cop pick?

What is aggravating are the dumba$$es that run detectors, and then slam on the brakes every time they go off. I wish I had a radar detector detector, so I could avoid those morons.

I did not receive a ticket. Though I think it ups your odds of getting one, just goes to show it doesn't actually guarantee it. |

A lot of small town PD's on small budgets still use the old hand-held radars and not laser. At least that's what my Escort used to tell me.
And small town cops are notorious for traps and writing tickets for 3 mph over the limit. So for that, detectors serve a purpose. Against laser, you lose. And unless the cop gets down on one knee, he/she isn't going to see the detector as low as these cars are. Some detectors are installed in-dash these days, anyway. |

Interesting reading. My question is that if lasers are the LEOs weapon of choice, why would anyone buy or feel safe with a radar dector? It sounds as if they are of no use against a point and shoot laser.....

I have the valentine 1 and a dashtronix radar projector... amazing combo!
Radar is tucked up high, to the right of my mirror. It is out of my sight, can't see it outside of the car, and all the alerts are sent to my HUD. Beautiful, this thing has saved me countless times. |

Valentine 1 all the way-not a waste of money at all. Not all agencies use lasers you would be surprised at how many don't. The only reason I got one is because it is very easy to go over the limit and not realize it, especially when not on cruise control. I like the Valentine 1 because it is directional and shows you exactly what direction and how many radars/officers there are. It even works around curves and hills pretty good for a long distance as well. I am totally pleased with mine, all our vehicles have one in it.

Yeah, I have the passport escort 9500 and it works great. It has also saved me numerous times. I have always heard good things about Valentine. It would be cool to have the Valentine and rear view mirror combo. |
