I was looking at the American Thunder because I like the sound and its also a lot cheaper

No catback is gonna be more than 5-10 HP. Borla will be on the highend because of their straight through design. Flowmaster on the other hand is a friction/chambered design..which will perform the same, or worse than stock. I would do a Borla Axleback before a Flowmaster catback if price is an issue.

There is also the difference in materials. Flowmaster is 409 stainless, which is a lower grade and can rust. Borla is 304, which is the highest exhaust grade and does not rust.

as said before.... if you ever plan on headers, go S type. If you don't plan on going further than intake and exhaust than do ATAK.

ATAK with headers sounds far too raspy for me, but it is all relative. However, you will probably think the S type is quite until you do the headers but it will be a drastic improvement in tone from stock either way..
