As far as the sticker-- yet another hole a dealer dumps money into... they mark up cars and service so they can buy useless systems like this (scanning the VIN would eliminate the need for this totally, I'd think).
That's true some do it for free. I'd still rather do it myself.

I don't think they mark up cars and service for useless systems.....I think they charge whatever people will pay (capitalism, right?) and if they can afford the charges for neat little stickers (also priced according to what dealers will pay) and some rep sells them on it, they sign up and hopefully they can woo customers so good they earn more customers, but if they don't earn more customers then it's a waste of money.

Most likely the funds come out of a predetermined marketing account. The money is already there, just cancel some other worthless program and do this one instead. Something like that.

No one signs up for a new marketing program and then calculates how much more they need to charge customers..... If you don't want to pay for marketing in the profits of the things you buy, good luck finding a company that hasn't tried getting your attention in some way. I also think you will find that when you spread the cost of a given program out over all the units for sale (be it a car or a service) you will find you aren't paying all that much.

Look at it this way, maybe we should all get paid just enough to pay our basic necessities. We don't need all the extra stuff like nice cars, nice clothes, good food, pets, jewels, big homes, etc. Only what we need to stay alive. Looks a little different on an individual level doesn't it? Well, corporations and business are made up of....people!

I get your analogy but I don't think it applies to something like this.

And my undergraduate degree is in Advertising and Marketing So I understand very well how that stuff works. All I was saying was that this is the kind of crap dealers waste money on-- rather than, oh, I don't know, training salesmen to actually know a little about the cars they sell? Every salesman I met who tried to sell me a Camaro couldn't even tell me the displacement of the engine or how many liters-- and one didn't even know what RS stood for.

Well I contacted Eric Hall at Classic Chevrolet, and it was in fact Classic Chevrolet that put it on there. It is an RF transmitter that lets him and the service dept know I am there.

I kinda feel bad now that I took it off this morning, but, on the other hand, it is an eyesore there on the door jam, and the service dept knows I am there, when I am there! And I always say hi to Eric when I am there, so he knows I am there in person!

I thought it was just a sticker... it LOOKS like just a sticker. Did it have a microchip in it when you peeled it off?? Weird.

It was thick and very sticky, but didn't look like it had a chip or a wire in it. I'll grab it out of the trash tonight and have a look.

If you feel bad and dont mind having it. Is it something you could stick on a piece of paper or on the owners manual in the glove box so its not such an eye soar??

Doesnt have to have a microchip in it. Just a mag strip, kind of like a credit card. The antenaes in the dealership find it and read it. You can buy them online and create your own system if you want. Chevy even has a van that you put them on the tools and when the guy pulls out lets him know if he left any of them on the job.

Scary isnt it kids.

I guess I didn't realize magnetic strips and RF transmitters were the same thing nowadays.

This

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking. Some tags require no battery and are powered by the electromagnetic fields used to read them. Others use a local power source and emit radio waves (electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies). The tag contains electronically stored information which can be read from up to several meters (yards) away. Unlike a bar code, the tag does not need to be within line of sight of the reader and may be embedded in the tracked object.
RFID tags are used in many industries. An RFID tag attached to an automobile during production can be used to track its progress through the assembly line. Pharmaceuticals can be tracked through warehouses. Livestock and pets may have tags injected, allowing positive identification of the animal.
Since RFID tags can be attached to clothing, possessions, or even implanted within people, the possibility of reading personally-linked information without consent has raised privacy concerns.

They can also do it with a strip which is what the OP had.

Not really a transmitter more like a magnet arranged to put the waves out in a certain way. So doesnt transmit as much as it can be read.

Like binary code, 1's and 0's arranged in a certain order. same thing, but with the magnetic waves. If you put a bunch of magnets in a order, south pole one way north pole the next then another north pole and so on it would then have waves that would be readable or assignable to a someone or something. Thats kind of rudimentary but you get the gest.

He said it was "so they'd know he was there" so it would have to actually transmit to be what they're telling him it was, right?

In any case it sounds like a waste of money to me!

All it does is provide you faster service at the dealership. It puts all of your vehicle/customer info on their computer screen so they won't have to dig for it. It also pulls up your service history for them so they can explain any needed services. It's a very efficient system, and I wish I'd had access to that technology when I ran dealer service departments. Saves employees and customers a lot of time.

Notwithstanding, I can see where some wouldn't like the sticker there, but 95% of the population couldn't care less about it.
