My first V8 sports car - Rough Idle or Normal???

When I stop it feels like I can feel the engine idling hard. I now have 1000 miles and has not taken the rpm's over 4000 like the manual states. The RPM's needle doesnt move when stopped, I just feel the engine idling what seems to be rough to me...Is this just the normal V8 breathing???

It's a 6.2L v8, that's monstrous. A little rumble is normal, don't sweat it.

post a video of the RPM gauge, that way you can get a correct answer. The Rpm needle if its a bare stock car should move no more than 1/2 a milimeter, almost steady as if it wasn't moving at all. Like when ignition key is off.

Uh oh...then I may have an issue...the needle is in between the 0 and the 1, .500 RPM...but it holds steady...doesnt move. I will have the dealer look at it...

It is not really the size of the engine, it is the type of cam that is in the engine. The LS3/L99 have "aggressive" high performance cam shafts. The more high performance the cam is, the rougher the idle. Unless, you move to "variable valve timing" (VVT). Which is basically a "variable cam" that can give a smooth idle and also high performance at higher rpm.

Note: V8 engines in the past had a reputation for smooth as silk idle.

A little rough idle on your LS3/L99 is normal.

So when I stop, my RPM's are idling at .500 (In between the zero and the one) is normal???

You have an automatic transmission or stick?

If automatic, is the idle you describe with the car in "Park" or in "Drive" with the brakes on?

I have an auto....its both in park and in drive with the brakes applied...but the rpm stays steady..doesn't move at all...

Thanks man...I think I mis understood your first comment...the rpm needle never moves....it stays right at .500 rpms...the engine just feels rough....I'm starting to think its just the 6.2 American Muscle that I'm not use to...

Yeah man, I would not worry about it. Once mine is warmed up, it idles right around 500 RPM. The needle doesn't move (maybe just a hair) but I can feel the car shake and wobble slightly. It's just the nature of that beast under the hood. Enjoy!
