Amp Tuning

I have just installed ********'s 5 Channel Total System Enhancement Package and am now looking to tune everything.

The Amp is a Polk PA D5000.5 Amp.

So I guess I have two main questions. Does anyone have recommended settings that work for this setup? Or can some one point me to a guide or help me themsleves.

Seems pretty straightforward but I have never done anything like this before,

I have the same question!

Do you guys recommend the front and rear speakers both be set to HPF or full range? I would guess HPF, but I know nothing about car audio.

Thanks!

What kind of front speakers are you running?? If the are coaxel Full range. if your running a sub high pass.. run your 6x9 at full front at high and adjust till you like what you have. I would adjust the front with out the rear playing at all.. then do the rear that way you dont get any false sence of correct sound. on what says LEVEL turn it all the way up then back it off 1/4 turn, I think thats your gain.. on the HPF about 1/2 is normaly a good place to start.. then start going clock wise. mids like between 120 and 220 on most speakers. and the subsonic ya got me thats going to be the tweeters and a really high frequency, I can hear those sounds anymore............ hope this helps

So here is what I found out - please correct me if I'm wrong.

Polk PA D5000.5 Amp:
  • 4 ohms: 70 watts x 4 chan + 200 watts x 1 chan
  • 2 ohms: 100 watts x 4 chan + 400 watts x 1 chan <-- This is the one we will be looking at ?
  • Subwoofer Channel (1 ohms): 500 watts x 1 chan

Polk DB1240 Single Coil 12" Sub-Woofer
  • Power: 360 watts RMS, 720 watts peak
  • Resistance: 4 ohm

All other speakers are stock 2013 BA speakers. I'm using the FARK wiring harnesses, etc. I have my DMM as well.

Set sub source to INT.

So,
  1. Unplug speakers
  2. HU volume around 75%
  3. Gains all the way down
  4. Subsonic all the way down
  5. Low Pass Filter all the way up
  6. Play my 50Hz track
  7. Turn up gain until voltage reachs ___?

So by formula sqrt [ (RMS) x (Speaker Ohm) ] for the sub we get
sqrt(360*4)=37.95 volts

We use the 360 over the amp's 400 (the smaller number)

Now what do we get for the rear speakers and front speakers? What are their ohms?

Any thoughts, guidance, or corrections would be much appreciated.

Trying to learn here!

Sqwirtle,

Did you ever get the setup tuned the way you want it? I am curious how it sounds in the Camaro. I am looking at purchasing the same system. How did the install go? Did you take any photos of the finished product?

That sounds good, thank you. I have been very impressed with Steve at ********, but I would love some feedback as to how this unit performs in the car.

Not to hijack Sqwirtle's thread, but since you asked about setup and pics, you may want to check out this thread : http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218235 It's the DIY of the setup that I did a while ago. you'll want to make a minor adjustment to the instructions and route the RCAs along the top of the amp, not the bottom as shown. it helps to eliminate alternator whine, since the RCAs are too close to the power lines when routed along the bottom.

Amp settings

I know that I'll probably get tons of posts saying that I did this wrong, but it sounds fine to me with the music that I listen to, so screw it...

Here are the settings that I use for my Polk D5000.5 in in my 2010 w/ the sub-thump total enhancement package:

In the sub section (top section of the amp):
Switch is set to INT
Level is approximately 60% (if amp is sitting flat on a table the screw would look like an X with the top right bar being the indicator of where you are set)
Sub-Sonic is set to 20 Hz (all the way down)
LPF is set to 220 Hz (all the way up)
Remote is plugged in and typically all the way up (will turn down when needed)

Rear section (bottom left of amp)
switch is set to FULL
Level is approximately 30% (if amp is sitting flat on a table and again the screw looks like an X with the top left bar being the indicator of where you are set)
HPF is set to 40 Hz (all the way down)

Front section (bottom right of amp)
switch is set to FULL
LPF is set to 4000 Hz (all the way up)
HPF is set to 40 Hz (all the way down)
Level is approximately 30% (same as the rear for balance)

Channel mode is 4 CH

With this setup and my ipod plugged into the USB, I typically run the volume between 8 and 15, depending on song volume and if the windows are down. Above 15 with the windows up and it starts to hurt. I use the head unit to control fade, though I usually keep it centered. I also use the EQ settings in the head unit to contour the sound the way that I want it.

As with anything that we do with these cars, it's all a matter of taste. If someone else has better settings, or tries mine and doesn't like them, great. Mine work for me. If you have better settings, share them.

I hope this helps you get started....

No hijack at all, Pur3vil was a great help to me!

Your amp settings should be set according to what the speakers take. For instance, your subsonic level, if the box says the sub plays 38hz-200hz, your subsonic should be near 38hz. This prevents the speaker bottoming out and damage to the speaker. The lpf on a sub doesnt really need to be above 80-90hz because your mids should take over the notes from there. I always run my 4channel amps on my vehicles and customers vehicles at full as long as there are enough tuning options on the amp. You do the same with the mids as the sub, tune to the lowest playable hz according to the speaker specs. As far as gains go, i've oscoped camaros before and the head unit volume was around 35-38 for peak. Set to that level and adjust your amp gains for best performance. For amps to be the most efficient you want the gains as low as possibly required. It cleans up the sound and increases the longevity of the amp.
