Need Advice on a Couple of Dealership Questions

When I purchase my new Camaro, what would be the advantage of selling my old vehicle through the dealership?

I can get more if I sell my vehicle to someone than I can if I trade it. The dealer said if I decided to sell my vehicle that I should let them handle the sell. Something to do with taxes. I don't understand how this process works. Can anyone explain this to me in simple terms.

Also, how do I make sure that the dealer is not playing number games with TTL? How do I find out exactly what I should pay for tax, how much for title, and how much for license?

This is the only other area that I am not familiar with and need a little advice.
I know what invoice is; now I just need to know what TTL should actually be to ensure I'm not being taken advantage of in this area.

I could be wrong, but I'd expect them to take/get a percentage or fee if they sell it for you.

As for TTL, there isn't anything they can fiddle with unless they simply lie to you. Those prices are fixed (taxes will be a percentage of price / title is fixed for your state / LIC plates are fixed for your state). So if they are going to work any numbers in their favor, it will be a charge for selling your old car, or the price of the new car.

Personally, I would simply sell the car outright or straight out trade.

The taxes that your dealer is telling you about is the tax break that you get against the new car. Let's say you are paying $30,000 for the new car, but you trade in your old car for $10,000, then you will only pay taxes on $20,000 of the purchase of the new car.

No they are not taking/getting a percentage or fee. They said something about me benefitting from a tax standpoint.

I really didn't get what they were saying because I had just placed my order for my Camaro and that's all that was on my mind. Sounded something like adults talking on the "Peanuts" shows - ""Wah wah woh wah wah"! LOL!

There is no tax benefit to you for selling thru dealer. If they want to help , tell them to give your name and number to any possible buyers.

I am not sure on Louisianna, so I may have been wrong. There is a tax break in Missouri and in Illinois though.

The dealer isn't going to do something for nothing. Somehow if they sell your car for you they will get something. Think about it, they have to pay somebody to keep it clean and sell it. They're in the business to make money, plain and simple. The only break that I could see is if you trade it you don't pay tax on that amount they give you. Being from PA I've never heard of tax breaks. The only thing about selling it yourself, as I always look at it, is how long will it take to sell if it sells. Is it worth the headache for a possible, not definite, in what you get.

In New Jersey you only pay Sales Tax on the difference. Price of car minus trade = taxable amount. If you sell the car yourself you pay tax on the whole selling price.

Wait, are they talking about a trade or selling your car as a consignment.
Sell it your self or trade it in. Why would you leave your car in their hands?
Who is liable if anything happens?

The dealer is not selling it for me. I am selling it myself and have a buyer.

The dealer said to just pass the sale through them, so it must be because of what EnjoyLife, Wabbit, jpraino, & He11bent are saying about getting a tax break on the trade.
